This prayer is written for Palm Sunday, the day the church remembers Jesus entering Jerusalem to crowds waving branches and calling out for help. You can pray it aloud as written on Palm Sunday morning, before worship, or carry it with you through Holy Week as a starting point for your own words. Use it as a blessing over your household, your congregation, or yourself as the week turns toward the cross.

Blessings for Palm Sunday

Lord Jesus, on this day the crowds shouted their hosannas, and some of them meant it with all their hearts. Some of us come to this Sunday with hearts that feel just as mixed. We want to celebrate, but we are carrying worry about a diagnosis, a strained marriage, a child who has wandered, or bills that do not add up. Meet us where we actually are. Let the palms in our hands remind us that you chose to enter a hard city as a king who came to save, not to impress.

Bless the ones who are walking into this week with heavy steps. Give rest to the tired parent, courage to the one facing surgery, and patience to the friend who has been waiting a long time for an answer. Keep our praise honest, so that when the mood of the crowd shifts, our faith does not shift with it. Teach us to stay close to you through the days ahead, from the upper room to the garden to the cross, so that we are not surprised by the sorrow of Friday or the joy of Sunday morning.

Fill our homes with peace this week. Soften the words we are tempted to throw at each other, and make us quick to forgive. Let our worship be more than a song we sing and forget. Make us people who follow the one who rode in on a donkey, humble and faithful, carrying hope into ordinary places. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Jesus, you are the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Bless me this Palm Sunday with a steady heart. Quiet what is anxious, lift what is heavy, and help me trust you with the week ahead. Let my praise be sincere whether the day feels bright or dark. Keep me near you through every step toward the cross and beyond it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 21:9

The multitudes who went in front of him, and those who followed, kept shouting, “Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let the crowd’s shouts become your own. Pray it for the people in your life who feel uncertain about whether God is really near, asking that they would recognize Jesus coming to them with salvation.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask for gladness that does not depend on circumstances. Pray it over the day itself, asking God to help you rejoice in him even while other parts of life remain unsettled.

John 12:13

They took the branches of the palm trees, and went out to meet him, and cried out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!”

(WEB)

This verse describes the palms and the praise. Pray it for the church gathering this week, that its worship would be sincere and rooted in who Jesus truly is, not only in the emotion of the moment.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

When the week feels long, pray this promise for yourself or someone who is worn out. Ask the Lord to renew strength in those who wait on him, especially for those who have little left to give.

Philippians 2:8

And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.

(WEB)

This verse points to the humility that marks the week ahead. Pray it for your own pride and for the relationships where humility is needed, asking Jesus to shape your heart after his.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this in the early morning, before the day fills up with noise. Sit near a window if you can, and hold a palm branch, a small cross, or simply your open hands in your lap. Let your hands remind you that you are receiving something, not just asking for it. Pause after each paragraph and name one specific person or situation the prayer brings to mind.

You can also pray it together at the dinner table or in the car on the way to church. A parent might read the prayer aloud to children, or a small group might take turns reading a paragraph each. If someone in your life is grieving or far from faith, pray it quietly for them, or invite them to pray it with you when they are ready.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who rode into Jerusalem meet you in every step of this week. May he steady your heart when the crowds grow loud and quiet your fear when the road grows dark. May he keep your praise honest, your hope alive, and your hands open to serve, until the morning of new life dawns.
