This morning prayer asks God for grace and mercy before the day begins, when the to-do list is still in your head and the first conversations have not yet happened. Pray it as you wake, over your coffee, or in the car before you walk into work. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words where your day needs them.

Morning Prayer for Grace and Mercy

Lord, I wake up to a new day and I am already tired of my own failures from yesterday. I snapped at someone I love, I put off a hard conversation, and I know I will fall short again before noon. Thank you that your mercy is new every morning, and that I do not have to earn it. Give me that mercy now, so that I can start this day without carrying yesterday’s guilt into every room I enter.

Father, I ask for your grace for the specific people I will meet today. Give me patience with the coworker who irritates me, gentleness with the child who will not get dressed, and honesty with the friend who needs more than a quick reply. Let me speak to them the way you have spoken to me. Where I have no wisdom for what is in front of me, give me the grace to ask for help instead of pretending I have it all figured out. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, have mercy on me this morning. I am not ready for everything on my calendar, and I am sorry for the ways I already missed the mark. Pour out your grace on me today, for the tasks, the people and the choices I face. Help me receive your mercy and then extend some of it to others. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you wake up. Thank God that his compassions are fresh today, and ask him to let that fact shape how you approach the first hour of your day.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.

(WEB)

Pray that you would come to God’s throne this morning with confidence rather than dread. Ask for the grace to bring him your real needs before you bring him your schedule.

Psalm 103:8-10

8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness. 9 He will not always accuse; neither will he stay angry forever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor repaid us for our iniquities.

(WEB)

Use this passage to name the times you need mercy most. Thank God that he does not treat you according to every mistake, and ask him to help you deal with others the same way.

Ephesians 2:4-5

4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)…

(WEB)

Let this verse remind you that God’s mercy comes from his great love, not from your performance. Pray that this truth would settle your heart before you check your phone.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Ask God to show you where you are relying on your own strength today. Pray that his grace would be enough for the particular weakness you feel as the day begins.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it before you check messages, news or email, since those are the first things that will pull your attention away from God. Sit somewhere quiet if you can, with a cup of something warm in your hands, and read the prayer slowly enough to hear each sentence. If you have a few minutes, write down one person or task from the prayer and carry it with you through the morning.

This prayer also works well for a parent praying over a household at breakfast, a spouse praying with a partner before the kids wake up, or a small group that meets early and wants to start together. Invite someone else to read it aloud while you listen, then trade places. Shared mornings have a way of making grace feel less like a private hope and more like a daily gift.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and make his mercy the first thing you meet. May his grace steady your hands, soften your words and give you enough strength for each task. May you walk out the door knowing you are loved and forgiven, and may that knowledge make you generous to everyone you encounter.
