This prayer is for the moment you know you should forgive someone but the feeling simply isn’t there yet. It is written for any time resentment keeps replaying in your mind, whether the hurt came from a family member, a friend, a coworker, or someone who never apologized. Pray it when you are ready to hand the injury to God, even if your heart has not caught up. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words from there.

Prayer for a Forgiving Heart

Lord, you know exactly what was done to me, and you know how often I have gone back over it in my head. I bring you the anger I have been carrying, the replaying of conversations, the rehearsed arguments I wish I had made. I confess that part of me wants this person to feel the weight of what they did. Help me be honest with you about that, because I cannot hide it from you anyway.

Father, you have forgiven me for far more than I could ever repay. Remind me of the mercy I have received so that I can begin to extend some of it. I do not ask you to make the hurt small or to pretend it did not matter. I ask you to soften the places in me that have hardened, and to loosen the grip that bitterness has on my thoughts and my sleep. Give me the courage to release this person into your hands, trusting that you are a righteous judge.

Holy Spirit, work patiently in me when I feel unable to forgive. Where forgiveness is a decision, give me the will to make it today, even if my feelings follow slowly. Where it needs time to grow, keep me faithful in the small steps. Protect my heart from the quiet pleasure of revenge, and let your peace settle where the old anger used to be. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am still holding this hurt, and I don’t want to carry it alone any longer. I choose to forgive the one who wronged me, and I give them to you. Where my feelings lag behind, be patient with me. Loosen my grip on resentment, remind me of the grace I have been given, and bring your peace into this place in my heart. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul ties forgiveness directly to the kindness we have already received from God. When you pray this verse, ask God to make his mercy toward you the reference point for how you treat the person who hurt you.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

This verse frames forgiveness as something that follows the pattern of the Lord’s own forgiveness. Pray it slowly, naming the specific offense, and ask for the strength to bear with that person as you have been borne with.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Jesus links our forgiveness of others with our own standing before the Father, which is sobering and clarifying. Use this passage to examine your heart honestly, and ask God to show you any refusal to forgive that you have been calling justified.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

The psalmist describes God removing our sins as far as east is from west. Pray this verse when you are tempted to keep bringing the old offense back up, asking God to help you let it go the way he has let go of your failures.

Mark 11:25

Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father, who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions.

(WEB)

Jesus connects prayer itself with the readiness to forgive. Pray this verse before you bring your own requests to God, asking him to clear anything between you and the person you need to release.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as the end of the day or the moment you first wake and feel the old hurt returning. Sit somewhere you can be still, and keep a pen nearby if you want to write down the specific words or memories that surface. Many people find it helpful to hold something in their hands while they pray, like a smooth stone or a cup of tea, so that the act of letting go has a physical sense to it.

You do not have to pray this alone. Ask a trusted friend, a pastor, or a small group to pray it with you or for you, especially on days when forgiveness feels impossible. Return to it often, because forgiveness is frequently a process that unfolds over weeks or months rather than one decision made once.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who forgave every debt you owed give you a heart that is light and free. May his peace guard the place where bitterness once lived, and may his kindness teach you to see the one who wronged you as someone who also needs mercy. Go in grace, and rest in the freedom that comes from letting him carry what was never yours to hold.
