This bedtime prayer for the sick is written for the end of the day, when someone you love is unwell and the house has gone quiet. Pray it in the evening, sitting by the bed, in the car on the way home from the hospital, or in your own room when worry keeps you awake. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for the Sick

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you the one who is sick. You know how tired their body is, how the pain comes and goes, and how hard it is to rest when every breath feels like work. Be near them now. Settle their breathing, ease the ache where it lives, and let the medicine do the good it was meant to do. Give the nurses and doctors wisdom and patience in the hours they still have to keep watch.

Father, let them sleep without fear. Quiet the thoughts that circle around tomorrow’s tests, the bills, the question of how long this will last. Where they cannot sleep, keep them company in the dark, so they are not alone with their worry. Guard their rest and their dreams, and let them wake to a little more strength than they had yesterday. Thank you that the night does not take you by surprise, and that you do not slumber over them. Hear this prayer and answer it according to your good and perfect will. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you see the one who is sick tonight. Give them rest, ease their pain, and steady their breathing. Be near the people who watch over them, and give them peace where they are afraid. Hold them through the night and bring them to the morning. Thank you for your faithful care. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly over the sick person as you sit beside them. Ask God to give them the kind of rest that comes from knowing they are kept safe, even when they cannot yet feel better.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Read this as a promise of watchfulness through the night. Thank God that the one who keeps Israel never sleeps, and ask him to keep your loved one awake to his care only as much as they need.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to weariness. Pray that God would give strength to the one who feels spent, and that the strength would come quietly, a little at a time, as the night goes on.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks to the weary here. Pray that the sick person would hear this invitation to come and rest, and that their body and mind would find some relief in his presence tonight.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

When fear keeps the mind racing, pray for the peace Jesus describes, a peace that is not the same as the world gives. Ask him to settle the heart of the one you love so that worry loosens its grip.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment after the last check of medications and before the lights go down. Sit close enough to touch the hand of the one who is sick, or rest your hand on the blanket near their shoulder. Pressing a cool cloth to their forehead or adjusting the pillow while you pray can keep your hands busy and your heart steady.

If you are not able to be there in person, pray it over a phone call or a message you send before bed. Invite a family member, a friend, or someone from church to pray the same words at the same hour, so the sick person knows many people are lifting them up together. Read it again in the morning, and let the night’s prayer become the start of the next day’s.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep the one who is sick and give them rest that restores both body and spirit. May he be a steady light in the dark hours and a gentle hand at the bedside. May the peace of God guard their heart and mind through the night, and may they wake to find his faithfulness waiting for them.
