This short morning prayer is for the day ahead, the hours between waking up and the first real demands of work, school, errands and people. Pray it as soon as you are up, while the coffee brews or before you check your phone, or read it aloud as written. You can also use it as a starting point and put your own words to the same requests.
Short Morning Prayer for the Day Ahead
Lord, thank you for this new morning. I did not make the light coming through the window, and I did not give myself this day, but you did. Before I open my messages or think about my list, I want to hand you the hours ahead. You already know what they hold: the meeting I am dreading, the conversation I have been putting off, the people who will need patience from me before lunch.
Give me clear thoughts and a steady pace. Keep me from rushing past the person in front of me to get to the next task. Where I am tired, give me strength I did not have yesterday. Where I am anxious about money, health or the future, remind me that you are already there. Help me work honestly, speak kindly, and stop when I need to stop.
Go before me into this day, and walk beside me through every hour of it. Let my first words be gentle and my last thoughts be grateful. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am starting this day and I do not know all it will bring. Be with me at work, at home and in every place between. Give me patience when I am pressed, honesty when it is hard, and kindness toward the people I meet. Keep my heart near you today. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying this prayer in the first five minutes after you get out of bed, sitting on the edge of the bed or at the kitchen table with a cup in your hands. Holding something warm can help you slow down enough to mean the words. If you have a planner or calendar, look at it while you pray and name the people and tasks you see there.
A family member, friend or small group can pray the same words together over breakfast or on the way to school or work. Praying it aloud with someone else can help you remember the day’s concerns and hold each other to them.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into this day and walk with you through every hour. May he give you patience for the difficult moments, peace for the anxious ones, and joy in the small good things. May his face shine on you from morning until evening.
