This evening prayer is for the end of the day when you want to bring your mother before God, lay down the worries you have carried for her, and ask for rest and protection through the night. Pray it at bedtime, in the car on the way home, or whenever the house has gone quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Evening Prayer for My Mother

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring my mother to you as the light fades. Thank you for the moments we shared today, for her laughter, for the small kindnesses that reminded me how much she has given me over the years. Thank you that she is still here, still able to talk with me, still part of my life. Where she felt pain today, or fear, or tiredness that she did not name, I ask you to meet her there. Ease her body as she tries to rest, and quiet whatever thoughts keep her awake.

Father, I also lay down my own worry for her. I think about her health, her finances, the choices she is facing, and the people who matter to her who are far away. I cannot hold all of that and sleep well, so I give it to you. Guard her tonight from harm, from loneliness, and from the dark thoughts that come at the hour when no one is near. Let her wake to a new morning with strength she did not have yesterday. Keep her safe in your care while she sleeps, and let her know she is never beyond your reach. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I release my mother to you for this night. Give her a peaceful sleep and a calm heart. Watch over her while she rests, and keep fear far from her room. Thank you for the gift of her life and for your faithfulness that does not end when the light goes out. Hold her close until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly over your mother, asking God to be the one who makes her truly safe. It is a reminder that rest is a gift God gives, not something she must earn by worrying herself to sleep.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Read these lines as a request that God would stay awake on your mother’s behalf through the night. Thank him that he never tires or grows careless with the people he loves.

Psalm 91:1-2

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”

(WEB)

Use this passage to ask that your mother would dwell in God’s shelter, especially on nights when she feels exposed or alone. Name the specific places where she needs protection.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring your mother’s anxieties to God in prayer, as Paul urges, and ask that the peace which surpasses understanding would guard her heart and mind tonight.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray that your mother’s mind would be kept steady as she trusts God. Ask him to settle the restless thoughts that tend to gather when the house is dark.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as after the last dinner dishes are done or just before you turn off your own light. Sit somewhere quiet, and if you have a physical object that reminds you of your mother, such as her photograph or a cup she always uses, hold it in your hands while you pray. Let the object be a small anchor for your attention.

If you live with other family members or close friends, invite them to pray this prayer with you, or to add their own sentence for your mother. If you are far from her, you might call her first and pray the short version together by phone, or simply tell her you are praying for her tonight so she knows she is held.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your mother and keep her through the night. May his face shine on her and his peace settle over her heart. May she wake refreshed, knowing she is loved by you and by the God who never sleeps.
