This short morning prayer is written for a missionary, someone who has given their days to serving God in a place far from home or in a community that is not their own. It is meant to be prayed early, before the first conversation, the first meeting or the first load of work begins. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words to God about the people and places on your heart.

Short Morning Prayer for a Missionary

Lord, you are awake before the sun, and you have already gone ahead of us into this day. Thank you for the one who lives and serves far from home. Be near them as they wake up in a place that may still feel unfamiliar, with a language that does not come easily, a kitchen that is not their own, and a list of tasks that seems longer than the hours available. Give them a clear mind this morning and a steady heart. Let the first thing they do today be to turn toward you.

Go before them into every meeting, every visit and every quiet moment with a neighbor or a child. Give them the right words when they need to speak and the patience to listen when they need to hear. Protect them from exhaustion, from discouragement and from the loneliness that comes with being far from family. Guard their health, their finances and their family members who are waiting for news. Where they feel their work is small or unseen, remind them that you see every faithful step. Work through their hands in ways they will not expect. We ask this in the name of Jesus, who sent his people out with a promise to be with them always. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, before this missionary steps into the day, go with them. Settle their thoughts, steady their hands and open the hearts of the people they will meet. Keep them safe, keep them rested and keep them close to you. Let their work today point to your love and your faithfulness. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the missionary as they leave home or step out into the street. Ask the Lord to guard their going out and their coming in, every time they move through the day.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this for the missionary who feels worn thin already at the start of the day. Ask God to renew their strength so that they can keep going without giving up hope.

Matthew 28:20

Teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

(WEB)

Pray this verse in the moments when the missionary feels alone. Thank God for the promise that he is present with his people in every place they are sent.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this over the anxieties the missionary carries into the morning, from unpaid bills to a difficult relationship. Ask God to replace their worry with a peace that steadies the mind.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this for the missionary who is tired of yesterday’s struggles. Ask God to remind them that his mercies are new each morning and that his faithfulness does not run out.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while the house or the room is still quiet, ideally before the missionary checks messages or leaves for the day. If you are praying for them yourself, a simple habit helps: keep a written note of their current location, the names of the people they serve, and one specific need, and read it aloud before you begin. Sitting with a cup of tea or a notebook in your hands can slow your thoughts enough to pray with focus.

Other believers can pray this same prayer at the same hour, even across a great distance. Agree on a time, perhaps when the missionary’s morning begins, and let your own prayers join theirs. Send a short message afterward to say you prayed, so the missionary knows they are carried by others each day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before this missionary today and walk beside them every step of the way. May he give them wisdom in each conversation, strength for each task and rest when the work is done. May they know, in every place they serve, that they are held in the hands of a faithful God.
