This short morning prayer is for anyone waking up sick, or caring for someone who is. It is meant to be prayed early, before the day’s first medication, first phone call or first wave of pain sets the agenda. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.
Short Morning Prayer for the Sick
Lord, I wake up and the first thing I notice is my body. It may be the ache in my joints, the tightness in my chest, the heaviness that makes getting out of bed feel like a task. Before I think about the medicine cabinet, the appointments or the messages I need to answer, I want to come to You. You know exactly how I feel this morning, and You are not surprised by it.
Be near me in the hours ahead. Give me enough strength for the small things: a glass of water, a shower, the walk to the kitchen. Steady my thoughts when fear starts to crowd in about test results or how long this will last. Help the people who will help me today, the nurse, the doctor, the family member who will drive me, the friend who will check in, to be patient and wise. Where I need healing, I ask for it. Where I need comfort while I wait, I ask for that. Remind me that I am not alone in this room, and that You have not stepped back from my life because my body is struggling. Thank You that Your care does not depend on how well I feel. Give me rest where I can find it, and a little hope to carry into the afternoon. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am sick and this morning feels hard. Be close to me right now. Give me strength for the next hour, peace where my mind is racing, and patience with my own body. Help me take the next small step. Thank You that I can bring You even my tiredness. Amen.

2 Corinthians 12:9
He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

On days when you feel you have nothing left, pray this promise back to God. Ask Him to let His strength show up in your limitations, and to help you accept help gracefully.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try to pray this prayer before you check your phone or look at your symptom tracker. Sitting on the edge of the bed with a glass of water in your hand works well, because your hands have something to do and you can pause between sentences. If you are too weak to speak fully, whisper it or let the words move quietly in your mind. God hears the prayer behind the words.
If you are caring for someone who is sick, pray this prayer over them before you help them out of bed. Replace “I” with their name, or pray it with them as a shared start to the day. You might also ask a family member, a pastor or a friend to pray it for you on the mornings when you cannot find the words yourself.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord be with you through every hour of this day. May He give you strength where you are weak, peace where you are anxious, and the company of people who love you. May you feel His nearness even when you feel unwell.
