This short prayer for our nation is for anyone who wants to bring their country before God without knowing where to begin. Pray it in the morning with your coffee, during a news break, or at the close of the day when the headlines have worn you down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer for Our Nation

Lord, you are the God who rules over every nation and every leader, and nothing in our country is hidden from you. We come to you on behalf of the people who live here, the ones we know by name and the ones we will never meet. Watch over our families, our neighbors, and the strangers who share our streets. Protect the children in our schools, the workers in our factories and fields, and the elderly who sit alone in quiet rooms.

We ask for leaders who fear you and who care more for the common good than for their own standing. Give wisdom to those who make laws, and give courage to those who enforce them fairly. Where there is division between neighbors, soften hearts on both sides so that people can listen before they shout. Where there is injustice, bring it into the light and give us the will to name it and repair it. Heal the wounds of our history and steady us for the days ahead.

Make us a people who tell the truth, keep our promises, and show mercy to those who have fallen behind. Protect us from fear that turns into hatred, and from pride that forgets we are all dependent on you. Let your peace settle over our cities and towns. We trust that you are still at work, even when we cannot see the outcome. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless our nation and the people in it. Give wisdom to our leaders, justice to our courts, and kindness to our neighbors. Guard the vulnerable, heal what is broken, and unite us in what is good. Teach us to love our country by serving it well and by loving the people in it as you love them. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul urges that prayers be made for all people, and specifically for those in authority. Read this slowly and let it shape your intercession for leaders you agree with and leaders you do not.

Psalm 33:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.

(WEB)

This verse names God as the source of a nation’s blessing. Use it to ask that our country would rest in God’s guidance rather than in its own strength alone.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

Jeremiah told exiles to seek the welfare of the city where they lived. Pray this for the place you call home, asking God to bring peace and prosperity to your community.

Proverbs 14:34

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

(WEB)

This proverb links the health of a nation with righteousness. Pray that our country would pursue what is right, both in its laws and in the everyday choices of its people.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah summarizes what God asks of his people: justice, mercy, and humility. Pray that these qualities would take root in our public life and in our private hearts.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as early morning before the day begins or evening after the news has been turned off. Sit somewhere quiet, with a cup of tea or a notebook in your hands. Writing the names of specific places, leaders, or groups you are concerned about beside the prayer can make it feel more personal and keep your attention from drifting.

You can also invite someone else to pray it with you, whether a spouse, a friend, or a small group from church. Reading it together gives you the chance to pause after each paragraph and add a sentence of your own. Over time, you may find that your prayers for the nation grow more patient, more honest, and more hopeful.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who governs every nation keep your heart steady and your hope anchored in him. May he bless the people of this country with wisdom, peace, and a deep sense of justice. And may he make you a faithful neighbor, a patient listener, and a quiet source of good in the place where you live.
