This simple prayer for my father is for the moments when you want to bring him before God but do not know where to begin. It can be prayed in the morning, at his bedside, during a phone call, or on the drive home from seeing him. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for My Father

Father God, I come to You for my dad. You know him fully, every year he has lived and every choice he has made. Thank You for the gift of his life and for the ways he has shaped mine, for the hands that worked, the words he spoke, and the care he showed even when he did not say it out loud. Be near to him today. If he is tired, give him rest. If he is worried, quiet his mind. If he is facing illness, weakness, or loss, hold him steady and let him feel that he is not alone.

Lord, I also ask for my father’s heart. Soften whatever has grown hard, heal what has been broken between him and the people he loves, and draw him closer to You in whatever way You know he needs. Give him wisdom for the decisions in front of him and peace about the things he cannot control. Let his days be filled with small mercies he can notice and be grateful for. I trust You with him more than I could ever trust myself. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank You for my father. Be with him right now, whatever he is facing. Give him strength for the next hour and peace for the days ahead. Draw him close to You and keep him in Your care. I release him into Your hands, knowing You love him more than I do. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this as a promise over your father’s going out and coming in. Ask God to guard his life in the everyday routines as well as the hard seasons, and thank Him that His watch does not pause.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When your father is anxious or overwhelmed, pray these words for him. Ask that he would bring his requests to God and receive a peace that steadies his thoughts when circumstances do not change.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Use this verse when your father feels spent or running on empty. Ask God to give him strength where his own is gone, and to renew what has been drained from him over time.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when your father is hurting in body, mind, or heart. Pray that the Lord who binds up wounds would tend to every place where your dad is wounded.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this over your father when he feels distant from God or afraid of what lies ahead. Ask that he would be sure nothing can separate him from the love of Christ, and let that truth settle deep in his heart.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time when you can sit down without rushing, such as early in the morning with a cup of coffee or in the evening after the house has settled. Keep a small note of your father’s name and his current needs near your chair or on your phone, so you can remember specific things as you pray. If you are with him in person, you might hold his hand, rest a hand on his shoulder, or simply sit close while you speak.

You do not need to pray it perfectly or cover every detail. If your mind wanders, return to the simplest line, which is “Lord, be with my father.” Invite a sibling, a friend, or your church family to pray the same words for him, so that he is lifted up by more than one voice. Over days and weeks, you may notice your own heart becoming more tender toward him, and that is part of what God does through this kind of prayer.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your father and keep him. May He make His face shine upon him and give him grace, and may He give him peace that holds steady through every season. May your father feel the nearness of God today, and may you, the one who prays for him, be held in that same faithful love.
