Psalm 55:22 tells you to hand your heavy cares over to the LORD, and it promises that he will hold you up under them and never let the righteous be knocked off their footing. The verse is spoken by King David, who wrote this psalm while he was under severe pressure from a close friend who had betrayed him. He is speaking to himself and to anyone who loves God, reminding them where to put the weight they cannot carry alone.

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

What Psalm 55:22 Means

The word “burden” refers to whatever weighs on you: a worry that keeps you up at night, a loss you cannot yet name, or a situation that seems too heavy to face. “Cast” is a strong, active word. It means to throw something decisively, not to set it down gently or hold on to it while asking for help. David is urging a deliberate act of trust, the kind of letting go that happens in prayer.

The promise that follows is that the LORD “will sustain you.” To sustain means to keep someone alive, supported and able to keep going. The second half of the verse adds that God will not allow the righteous to be moved, meaning shaken from their place of stability. The verse does not promise that your circumstances will be easy or that hard things will vanish. It promises that God will hold you steady inside them.

The Context of Psalm 55:22

Psalm 55 is a lament, a prayer of distress in which David pours out his fear and grief. Verses 12 to 14 reveal that the source of his pain is someone he trusted deeply, a companion with whom he once walked to the house of God. Just before verse 22, David describes that betrayal in sharp detail: smooth words that hide hostility, and a covenant broken. The psalm reflects the wounds of a person who has been let down by someone close.

Read in that setting, verse 22 is not a cheerful slogan. It is a choice made in the middle of pain. David does not pretend the betrayal has not happened. Instead he sets his burden before God and declares that the one who judges justly will deal with the wicked, while he himself will keep trusting. That honest mix of grief and trust is what gives the verse its strength.

Key Phrases in Psalm 55:22

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

Peter echoes the same invitation, urging believers to cast all their anxiety on God because he cares for them. Reading it alongside Psalm 55:22 shows that this kind of letting go is a long-standing pattern of faith, now grounded in the personal care of God for each believer.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

This verse declares that God is a refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. It pairs well with Psalm 55:22 because both describe God as a dependable place of safety, reminding you that his support is the foundation for courage when life feels unsteady.

A Short Prayer From Psalm 55:22

Lord, I have been carrying things I was never meant to hold alone. Some of them keep me awake, and some of them I have not even said out loud to anyone. Right now I choose to cast them onto you. I give you the worries about what comes next, and I give you the hurt that still stings. Please sustain me in the days ahead, give me the strength to take the next faithful step, and keep me steady when the ground seems to shift. Thank you that you do not ask me to be strong on my own. Amen.
