The creation Bible story for kids teaches that God made the whole world by speaking, and that everything He made was good. Children aged about 5 to 11 can follow it in a 20 to 30 minute lesson, using the first chapter of Genesis as the story.
Big Idea
God made everything, and He made it all good. The sun, the sea, the animals and people all came from His loving word.
Memory Verse
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Hold both hands out wide like you are holding the whole world, then slowly open them up as you say the words together. Repeat it three times, getting a little quieter each time until the children whisper it.
The Story: Genesis 1 for Kids
In the very beginning, there was no sun, no sky, no trees, and no animals. The earth was dark and empty, and water covered everything. But God was already there, and He was ready to make something wonderful.
On the first day, God said, “Let there be light!” And light came shining into the darkness. God looked at the light and saw that it was good. He named the light day and the dark night, and that was the first day.
On the next days, God made the sky to separate the waters, and then He gathered the water into seas so dry land could appear. Then He made grass, flowers, and trees full of fruit. God made the sun, moon, and stars to shine in the sky, and He made fish in the seas and birds in the air. Every time, God saw that it was good.
On the sixth day, God made the animals of the land, from big livestock to tiny creeping things. Then God said, “Let us make people in our image.” So God made a man and a woman, and He loved them very much. He told them to take care of the world He had made.
At the end of the sixth day, God looked over everything He had made, and it was very good. The story ends with God resting on the seventh day after all His work was done.
Read It Together
Genesis 1:3-4
3 God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw the light, and saw that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness.

Point out that God spoke, and light appeared just because He said so. Ask the children to notice the words “it was good,” which show God’s care for what He made.
Genesis 1:26-27
26 God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.

Show the children that people were made in a special way, as God’s image. Explain that this means every person has real worth because God made them.
Genesis 1:31
God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

Help the children see that God looked at all of creation and called it very good. Talk about how God is pleased with the world He made and with each person in it.
Talk About It
- What is your favorite thing God made, and why do you like it?
- How do you think God felt when He saw the light, the trees, and the animals?
- Why do you think God made people to take care of the world?
- What did God do first, and what did He make last?
- How can you show thanks to God for the world He made?
Activity Ideas
Paper Plate Creation Picture
You will need paper plates, crayons or markers, cotton balls, and glue. Ask each child to draw one thing from each day of creation on the plate, such as a sun, a fish, or a tree. Let them glue cotton balls on for clouds and then tell the class which day their picture shows.
Day and Night Freeze Game
Choose one player to be God and the rest to be the things He made. When God calls out “light,” everyone jumps up and spins, and when God calls out “dark,” everyone crouches down and freezes. Play a few rounds, and end by having everyone shout together that God made it all good.
Family Creation Walk
Go on a short walk outside with your children and bring along a small notebook or paper. Ask them to name five things God made that they see, like trees, birds, or clouds. When you return home, have them draw one of those things and say a sentence thanking God for it.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Genesis 1 presents God as the sovereign Creator who speaks and brings order out of formlessness. It also affirms that all of creation is good and that humans bear God’s image with a calling to care for the world. Read the chapter as a joyful announcement of God’s power and goodness rather than as a science textbook.
Avoid overstating how the creation days correspond to exact time periods or scientific details. Children do not need a debate about the length of the days, so keep the focus on God’s power, His goodness, and the way everything He made reflects His care.
A Prayer to Close
Father, thank You for making the sun, the sea, the animals, and people. Help us to see that everything You made is good, and help us to take care of it. Thank You for loving us. Amen.
