These morning prayers for protection are written for the first minutes of your day, before the phone, the inbox and the people who need you take over. Pray them aloud as they are written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own worries to God in your own words. They are meant to be quick enough to say over coffee and honest enough to carry you into whatever the day holds.
Morning Prayers for Protection
Lord, I wake up today and I already know some of what is coming. There is the drive to work with traffic I cannot control, the meeting where I will need to speak clearly, and the phone call I have been dreading. Be my shield on the road and in the rooms I walk into. Guard my body from accidents and sickness, and guard my mind from the anxious thoughts that rush in before I have even got out of bed.
Protect the people I love today. Watch over my children at school and on the playground, my spouse at work, my parents who are getting older and my friends who are carrying heavy things right now. Surround them with your presence and keep harm far from their doors. Where I cannot be there, I ask that you be there in my place. Keep my tongue from careless words and my heart from bitterness toward anyone who frustrates me today.
Father, I give you the hours ahead, the ones I have planned and the ones I have not. Stand between me and the things that would pull me away from you, whether that is fear, temptation, discouragement or the quiet lie that I am on my own. I trust you to keep watch when I am tired and to lift me when I stumble. Thank you for being a safe place to return to all day long. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, go before me into this day. Cover me on the road, at my work and in every conversation. Guard the people I love and keep my heart steady when fear comes. I rest in your care for the hours I cannot see yet. Keep me close to you. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer while you are still sitting on the edge of your bed or standing at the kitchen sink, before you open your phone or check the news. A few minutes of quiet at the start of the day sets a different tone than reaching for the screen. If you have a Bible or a notebook nearby, keep it open to one of the verses above so your eyes have something to rest on while you speak.
Give your hands something to do while you pray. Hold a warm mug, press your palms together, or trace the cross on your wrist or the edge of a table. A parent could pray this together with a child at breakfast, or a spouse could say it aloud over the other before one leaves for work. Praying it with someone else gives you a second voice to lean on when your own words run short.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you and walk beside you through this day. May he be a wall of protection around your home, your work and your loved ones, and may his peace guard your heart and mind in every hour ahead.
