These prayers are written for Valentine’s Day, a day that can bring up joy, loneliness, gratitude, or pressure all at once. Pray the main prayer slowly in the morning, over a card or a cup of coffee, or read it at the end of the day when the flowers have wilted and the evening feels quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for Valentine’s Day

Lord, thank you for the people who love me well, and for the ones who love me imperfectly, because you are the One who loves perfectly. Today the calendar is full of hearts and reminders, and some of us feel them more than others. If I am spending this day with someone I love, help me to notice them and to be patient with their faults and my own. If I am alone, or grieving a love that has ended or never came, comfort me and remind me that I am not forgotten by you.

Teach me to love in ways that are honest and not performed. Let my affection be shown in small, real things: a kind word, a listening ear, a meal shared without hurry. Guard my heart from comparing my story to anyone else’s, and from measuring my worth by who remembered me today. Remind me that my value rests in being yours. Give me grace for the disappointments of this day and gladness for its gifts. Keep my love open and steady, and let it point others back toward you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, you are love, and you have loved me first. Help me love the people in front of me today, whether they are close or far away. Heal what is lonely in me, and keep what is full in me from becoming proud. Let my heart be gentle, honest, and generous. In your name I pray, Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Pray this passage as a mirror. Ask God to make your love patient and kind in the everyday moments, and to root out any envy or pride that creeps in on a day like this.

1 John 4:19

We love him, because he first loved us.

(WEB)

Use this verse to rest in the truth that love starts with God. Thank him that your capacity to love others is a response to the love he has already poured out on you.

Psalm 136:1

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his loving kindness endures forever.

(WEB)

Let this verse turn your thoughts toward gratitude. Name a few specific people who have shown you steady love, and thank God for each one by name.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Bring this promise to any place of fear or loneliness the day has stirred up. Ask God to help you believe that nothing can separate you from his love, however you feel right now.

Ephesians 5:2

Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the way you want to show love. Ask Jesus to shape your affection into something self-giving, the way his own love was shown to us.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as early morning before the day gets busy or late evening after everyone has gone to bed. Sit somewhere you can be still, and hold a cup of tea, a pen, or a small card in your hands while you pray. Writing a sentence or two of your own at the end can help you carry the prayer into the rest of the day.

If you are praying with a spouse, partner, friend, or family member, read the prayer together and take turns adding a line of your own. Couples can pray for each other by name, and single people can invite a friend to pray for them. Praying this together turns a day that can feel lonely into a shared act of trust in God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who loves you without measure fill your heart with peace today. May he show you the people who need your kindness, and give you the courage to offer it freely. May you rest in the knowledge that you are deeply known and fully loved, every day of the year.
