In 1 Chronicles 15, King David learns that God’s ark must be carried the way God said, not the way is easiest. Children can remember the lesson in one sentence: “We do things God’s way because God is worth honoring.” This lesson works for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God gives clear instructions, and when we follow them carefully and with joy, we honor him. Doing things his way is a way of showing we love him.

Memory Verse

1 Chronicles 15:15

The children of the Levites bore God’s ark on their shoulders with its poles, as Moses commanded according to the LORD’s word.

Have children stand and lift both arms on their shoulders, as if carrying a heavy box, then stomp in place three times. Each stomp says, “God’s way!” This motion helps them picture the Levites carrying the ark the way Moses taught.

The Story: 1 Chronicles 15 for Kids

King David had built a nice house in the city of Jerusalem. He wanted a special place for God’s ark, the golden box that held a reminder of God’s presence. David made a tent for it and got ready to bring it home with a big celebration.

David gathered all of Israel together. He also called the priests and the Levites, the helpers who served God at the temple. David said to them, “You are the leaders of your families. Make yourselves clean and holy, because God wants us to do this his way.” The Levites did what David asked and made themselves ready.

Earlier, the ark had been carried the wrong way, and God was not pleased. This time, the Levites carried the ark on their shoulders with poles, just as God had told Moses. Singers and musicians walked alongside them, playing harps, cymbals, and trumpets. Everyone was singing and shouting with joy.

Then the ark came into David’s city. King David was so happy that he danced and played his instrument before God. He wore a special linen robe and was not ashamed to celebrate. Michal, the daughter of Saul, watched from a window, and she did not like what she saw.

The people brought the ark up with shouting and music, and they offered sacrifices to God. Their joy came from knowing that God had helped them do it right. The whole city was full of praise.

Read It Together

1 Chronicles 15:2

Then David said, “No one ought to carry God’s ark but the Levites. For the LORD has chosen them to carry God’s ark, and to minister to him forever.”

(WEB)

Point out that David said the ark should be carried only by the Levites, because God had chosen them. Ask children why it matters that God made the rules and not people.

1 Chronicles 15:12-13

12 And said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers’ households of the Levites. Sanctify yourselves, both you and your brothers, that you may bring the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, up to the place that I have prepared for it. 13 For because you didn’t carry it at first, the LORD our God broke out in anger against us, because we didn’t seek him according to the ordinance.”

(WEB)

Show how David asked the leaders to make themselves holy before moving the ark. Explain that holiness means being set apart for God, and that preparing our hearts is part of honoring him.

1 Chronicles 15:28

Thus all Israel brought the ark of the LORD’s covenant up with shouting, with sound of the cornet, with trumpets, and with cymbals, sounding aloud with stringed instruments and harps.

Point to the many sounds of the celebration: shouting, trumpets, cymbals, and harps. Help children see that worship can be loud, joyful, and full of happy noise when people are thankful to God.

Talk About It

  • Why do you think God wanted the ark carried in a specific way?
  • What is something God has asked us to do that might be hard, but that shows we love him?
  • How did the people in the story show that they were happy about God’s presence?
  • What did David do to get ready before the ark came to Jerusalem, and how can we get ready to worship?
  • How can we celebrate God in our own homes, at church, or outside with our friends?

Activity Ideas

Draw the Golden Box

Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask them to draw a simple box with two poles sticking out of the sides, like the ark carried by the Levites. Let them decorate it with stars, hearts, or patterns, and talk about how the ark reminded Israel of God’s presence.

Carry the Ark Game

Use a shoebox or small basket as the ark and two sticks or rolled-up towels as poles. Have children take turns carrying the box between two people while everyone else claps or taps a pot with a wooden spoon. Stop the game each time someone carries it the wrong way, and talk about following instructions carefully.

Take-Home Joy Card

Cut strips of paper and let children write or draw one thing they are thankful for about God. Fold the strips into a small card or tuck them into an envelope. Encourage the family to read them together at dinner this week, reminding everyone that celebrating God can happen anywhere.

Teacher Notes

This passage shows that God cares about how we come to him, not only that we come. David learned that God’s commands matter, and that worship must be done with reverence and preparation. For adults, the chapter invites a careful heart that honors God’s word and rejoices in his presence.

Avoid suggesting that God’s anger means he will punish children for every small mistake. The story’s correction was about obeying God’s clear instructions, and children should hear that God is patient, loving, and faithful to them as they learn.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you for giving us clear instructions and for caring how we honor you. Help us prepare our hearts, follow your ways with joy, and celebrate you with thankful voices. We love you, Lord. Amen.
