In this lesson, children learn that God gives every person a job to do in his house, and that every job matters. It works well for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God gives each of his helpers a special job, and when we work together for him, we make his house a happy place.

Memory Verse

1 Chronicles 23:30

And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise in the evening…

(WEB)

Have the children stand up and raise their hands high each morning, then bring them down slowly as they say the words together. Repeat the motion so the words stick, like a little morning stretch for God.

The Story: 1 Chronicles 23 for Kids

David was now very old, and he knew it was almost time for his son Solomon to become king. He wanted Solomon to be ready. So David called all the leaders of Israel together, including the priests and the Levites, the men who took care of God’s house.

David counted the Levites. There were thirty-eight thousand men who were thirty years old or older. That was a lot of helpers! David divided them into groups so that each group had its own special work to do. Some would take care of the house of the LORD. Some would be officers and judges. Some would guard the doors. And some would sing and play music to praise God.

The Levites belonged to three big families, named after Levi’s sons: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Each family had its own leaders, and each leader had a list of children and grandchildren who would carry on the work. Picture a big family tree with lots of branches, all of them helping in God’s house.

Then David said something wonderful. He told everyone that God had given his people rest, and that God would live in Jerusalem forever. Because God would have a permanent home there, the Levites would not need to carry the tent and its tools from place to place anymore. Their work would change, but it would still be important.

So each day, the helpers would stand together to thank and praise the LORD in the morning and in the evening. They would help with the holy bread, offer the burnt offerings on special days, and keep the house of God clean and ready. Every helper had a part, and every part was needed.

Read It Together

1 Chronicles 23:4

David said, “Of these, twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of the LORD’s house, six thousand were officers and judges…

(WEB)

Point out that David gave many jobs to many helpers. Ask the children to notice that some helpers worked with instruments and some worked at the doors, and that all of them served God.

1 Chronicles 23:25-26

25 For David said, “The LORD, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people; and he dwells in Jerusalem forever. 26 Also the Levites will no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all its vessels for its service.”

(WEB)

Explain that David was thankful God had given his people a settled home. Show the children how a change in the work still kept the helpers busy for God, because God’s house was now in one place.

1 Chronicles 23:28-29

28 For their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the LORD’s house, in the courts, and in the rooms, and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work of the service of God’s house; 29 for the show bread also, and for the fine flour for a meal offering, whether of unleavened wafers, or of that which is baked in the pan, or of that which is soaked, and for all measurements of quantity and size…

(WEB)

Help the children see the careful, everyday tasks the helpers did, like preparing bread and measuring flour. Remind them that faithful work in small things is still work done for God.

Talk About It

  • What job would you like to do to help at church, and how could you do it well?
  • Why do you think David wanted every helper to have a special job?
  • How did the Levites praise God, and how can you praise God today?
  • What changed for the Levites when God gave his people a permanent home, and what stayed the same?
  • Who is one person at church who helps in a quiet way, and how can you thank them?

Activity Ideas

Helper Badge Drawing

Give each child a paper circle, crayons, and a pencil. Ask them to draw a picture of a helper job they would like to have in God’s house, like singing, opening doors, or setting out bread. Write the job name on the back and let them wear the badge home.

Pass the Job Game

Gather the children in a circle and place a small object, like a block or a stuffed toy, in the middle. Name a helper job, such as “doorkeeper,” and have the children act it out while the object is passed around. Change jobs each round and end with everyone thanking God together.

Family Thank-You Chart

Take a sheet of poster paper and draw a large house with a door. Give each child sticky notes to write or draw one way a family member helps at home. Post the notes on the house and read them aloud at dinner, reminding everyone that every helper is needed.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God values every kind of service in his house. It reminds us that the work of worship includes both public leadership and quiet, faithful tasks, and that God’s people are called to serve him in whatever role he gives them.

When teaching children, avoid making the chapter about exact numbers or family lists, since those details can overwhelm young learners. Keep the focus on David’s generous heart and the idea that every helper has a meaningful job for God.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank you for giving us all special jobs to help in your house. Help us serve you with joy, whether we sing, open doors, or do small tasks no one sees. Teach us to praise you every morning and every evening. Thank you that you are with us always. Amen.
