In this lesson, children learn that God gives every person a job to do in His house, and that faithful, ordinary helpers matter to Him. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, so plan for a short story, a memory verse, and one activity.

Big Idea

God gives every helper an important job in His house, and He is pleased when we do our part faithfully, even when no one is watching.

Memory Verse

1 Chronicles 26:12

Of these were the divisions of the doorkeepers, even of the chief men, having offices like their brothers, to minister in the LORD’s house.

Teach children to stand tall, hold their arms out wide like a doorway, and then fold their hands in front of their hearts as they say the verse. Repeat it together three times, getting a little quieter each time.

The Story: 1 Chronicles 26 for Kids

A long time ago, King David was getting the place of worship ready for God. The people of Israel had a special house where they gathered to worship God, and it needed many people to take care of it. Some men were chosen to be gatekeepers, guarding the doors so that everything stayed safe and in order.

The gatekeepers came from several families. A man named Meshelemiah had many sons, and each of them was a strong and capable helper. A man named Obed-Edom also had many sons. The Bible says God blessed Obed-Edom and his family, so they grew into a large and busy household.

The gatekeepers did not all guard the same door. Instead, they took turns and drew lots to decide which gate each family would watch. Some stood at the east gate, some at the north, some at the south, and some at the west. Each helper had a place to stand and a job to do.

Some helpers had special work to keep the treasures of God’s house safe. A man named Shelomoth and his brothers looked after the gifts that people had given to God. They made sure every gift was kept carefully. Their job was quiet, but it was very important.

Other men were chosen to help with the business of the king and the work of God across the land. One leader, named Hashabiah, and his brothers helped people in many places. They were brave and hardworking, and they were trusted with big responsibilities.

Everyone in this story had a different job, but each person was needed. The gatekeeper, the treasure keeper, and the leader all served God by doing their work well and faithfully.

Read It Together

1 Chronicles 26:1

For the divisions of the doorkeepers: of the Korahites, Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of Asaph.

(WEB)

Point out that this verse shows families serving together. Ask children to notice that the gatekeepers belonged to different families, and each family had its own part in caring for God’s house.

1 Chronicles 26:13

They cast lots, the small as well as the great, according to their fathers’ houses, for every gate.

(WEB)

Explain that the helpers drew lots to decide their gates. Tell children that God’s people trusted Him with the choices, and that every person was given a place that mattered.

1 Chronicles 26:20

Of the Levites, Ahijah was over the treasures of God’s house and over the treasures of the dedicated things.

(WEB)

Show children that Ahijah was given care over the treasures of God’s house. Point out that God trusts His people with important things, and that faithful care is a way of honoring Him.

Talk About It

  • What job would you like to do to help at church, and how could you do it well?
  • Why do you think God wanted every helper to have a special place to stand?
  • How did the families in this story work together to care for God’s house?
  • What does it look like to be faithful when no one is watching you?
  • Who is one helper at church you can thank this week, and what could you say?

Activity Ideas

Draw a Gate Guardian

Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons, and a pencil. Ask them to draw a gate with a helper standing beside it, then write or dictate one thing that helper does to take care of God’s house. Display the drawings together on a wall so the class can see how many helpers there are.

Gatekeeper Freeze

Mark four corners of the room with paper or tape and label them north, south, east, and west. Play music and have children move around the room. When the music stops, they run to a gate and freeze in a guarding pose, arms wide like a doorway. Repeat several times, and talk about how each helper had a place to stand.

Helper Jar at Home

Give each child a small jar, some paper strips, and a marker. Ask them to write one helpful job they can do at home or church each day, then fold the strip and drop it in the jar. Encourage the family to read one note together each evening and thank God for each helper.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God values every role in the life of His people, from the visible leaders to the quiet keepers of treasure and property. It reminds us that faithful, ordinary service is never small in His eyes, and that families can serve Him together across generations.

With children, avoid overstating the details of the lots, the family names, or the exact number of helpers, since the chapter is largely a list. Keep the focus on the simple truth that God gives each person a job and is pleased with faithful service.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for giving each of us a job to do in Your house. Help us to be faithful helpers, even when no one is watching. Show us how to serve You and each other with a happy heart. Amen.
