This lesson teaches children that God is light, and when we love others and keep close to Jesus, we walk in that light. It is written for children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
Jesus helps us when we do wrong, and we show we belong to God by loving our brothers and sisters, not hating them.
Memory Verse
1 John 2:10
He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him.
(WEB)
Have children cup both hands in front of their chests like they are holding a little light. Then slowly open their hands outward while saying “light” together. Repeat it three times so the words and the motion stay together.
The Story: 1 John 2 for Kids
John was an old friend of Jesus, and he wrote a letter to the children and friends in his church. He loved them very much and wanted them to stay close to God. He knew everyone makes mistakes sometimes, so he wrote, “My little children, I write these things so that you may not sin.”
But John also wanted them to know what to do when they do wrong. He said that if anyone sins, we have someone who speaks for us to the Father, and that is Jesus Christ, who is always good and always right. Jesus is the one who makes things right again for us, and not only for the people in John’s church, but for the whole world.
John wrote about light and dark. He said that if we say we love God but are mean to our brother, we are still walking in the dark. “He who loves his brother remains in the light,” John wrote. When we are kind to the people around us, we are living in God’s light, and nothing makes us trip and fall.
John also reminded them of something they already knew. They had heard about Jesus from the very beginning, and that truth should stay in their hearts. He told them to keep that story close, so they would stay close to Jesus and to the Father. He wanted them to be ready to see Jesus, feeling brave and not ashamed.
Read It Together
1 John 2:1
My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.
(WEB)
Point out that John says he writes this so we won’t sin, and then he says that Jesus is our helper when we do. Ask the children what they think it means to have a helper who speaks for us to God.
1 John 2:9-11
9 He who says he is in the light and hates his brother, is in the darkness even until now. 10 He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and doesn’t know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
(WEB)
Show how these verses connect hating a brother with walking in the dark. Help the children name one way they can love a friend or sibling this week, so they can stay in the light.
1 John 2:24-25
24 Therefore, as for you, let that remain in you which you heard from the beginning. If that which you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son, and in the Father. 25 This is the promise which he promised us, the eternal life.
(WEB)
Point out the words “let that remain in you” and talk about keeping God’s story in our hearts. Explain that the promise is eternal life, which means life with God that never ends.
Talk About It
- What is one thing you can do when you realize you did something wrong?
- Who is the helper John says we have when we sin, and what does that helper do for us?
- What does it look like to walk in the light instead of the dark?
- How can you show love to someone who is hard to be kind to?
- What part of God’s story do you want to keep close in your heart?
Activity Ideas
Light and Dark Drawing
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a flashlight. Have each child draw a dark picture on one half of the paper and a bright, colorful scene on the other half. Talk about how the bright side shows what it looks like to love others and walk in God’s light.
Stay in the Light Game
Turn off the lights in the room if it is safe, and shine a flashlight on the floor. Ask children to walk around the room while staying inside the circle of light, and call out a kind action each time they step into it, like sharing or helping. Then talk about how love keeps us in the light.
Take-Home Light Card
Give each child an index card and a small battery candle or flashlight to decorate the card with stickers and crayons. Ask them to write or draw one way they will show love at home this week. Encourage them to place the card by their bed as a reminder to keep walking in God’s light.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this passage reminds us that knowing God is shown in how we live, especially in how we treat other believers. John is not saying we must be perfect, but that Jesus stands ready to help when we fail, and that love for others is the clearest sign that we belong to him. He ties light and darkness to love and hate, which gives a clear picture for daily life.
Be careful not to overstate the idea of “the world” or “antichrists” to children, since the chapter speaks about these in a broad way that can frighten young learners. Keep the focus on Jesus as our helper and on the simple call to love others.
A Prayer to Close
Dear Jesus, thank you that you are our helper when we make mistakes. Help us to love our brothers and sisters and to walk in your light every day. Keep your story in our hearts so we stay close to you and the Father. Amen.
