In this lesson, children learn that God keeps His promises and honors people who love and obey Him, even when others around them do not. It is built for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God sees faithful hearts, and He takes care of the people who love Him, even when life feels unfair.

Memory Verse

1 Samuel 2:2

There is no one as holy as the LORD, For there is no one besides you, nor is there any rock like our God.

Cup both hands together in front of your chest, then lift them up toward the ceiling slowly as you say the verse. Ask the children to copy your motion so the words stay in their hands as well as their heads.

The Story: 1 Samuel 2 for Kids

A long time ago, a woman named Hannah had no children, and she was very sad. She went to the house of the LORD and prayed with all her heart. She asked God for a baby, and she promised to give that child back to serve Him. God heard her prayer.

Hannah’s baby was a boy, and she named him Samuel. When he was old enough, Hannah brought him to live and help at the house of the LORD with Eli the priest. Every year she brought him a new little robe, and every year her heart filled with thankfulness.

Eli had two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, who were very wicked. They did not know the LORD, and they took the best meat from the people’s offerings for themselves. People were sad and angry about how they behaved. Eli said to his sons, “Why do you do such things?” but they did not listen to their father.

While these bad things happened, young Samuel kept growing. He served the LORD faithfully, and people liked him more and more. God was pleased with Samuel, and He spoke to his heart. God said that He would honor the people who honor Him.

Hannah had three more sons and two daughters after that. God blessed her because she had trusted Him. The story shows that God remembers those who are faithful to Him, even in hard seasons.

Hannah rejoiced in God and praised Him. She said that the LORD makes poor people rich and lifts up the needy. She trusted that God was in control of everything, and she was right.

Read It Together

1 Samuel 2:6-8

6 “The LORD kills, and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol, and brings up. 7 The LORD makes poor, and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up. 8 He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill, To make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s. He has set the world on them.

Point out that God is the one who gives life and makes people strong. Ask the children to notice how God lifts up those who feel forgotten, showing that He cares for everyone.

1 Samuel 2:21

The LORD visited Hannah, and she conceived, and bore three sons and two daughters. The child Samuel grew before the LORD.

Show the children how God blessed Hannah after she trusted Him. Explain that the story of Samuel growing up shows God’s faithfulness across many years.

1 Samuel 2:30

“Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever.’ But now the LORD says, ‘Far be it from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me will be cursed.

Help the children see that God keeps His word. He says He will honor those who honor Him, and He means it. Explain that respecting God matters in every part of life.

Talk About It

  • How do you think Hannah felt when she prayed for a baby, and how do you think she felt when God answered?
  • What is one thing Samuel did every day to serve God in the house of the LORD?
  • Why do you think Eli’s sons were not happy even though they had a lot of food?
  • What are some ways we can show God that we love and honor Him at home or at school?
  • When something feels unfair, what can we remember about how God takes care of people?

Activity Ideas

Draw a Thankful Robe

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and scissors. Ask each child to draw a simple robe on paper, then decorate it with patterns or favorite colors. Let them write or draw one thing they are thankful to God for on the robe. Explain that Hannah made Samuel a new robe each year because she loved him and was thankful.

Honor the Leader Game

You will need a small open space and a few household objects, such as a cup or a shoe. Have the children stand in a line, then call out simple commands like “Stand tall” or “Bow your head.” Each time they follow an instruction well, cheer for them. Explain that honoring God means listening and obeying Him with a good heart.

Take-Home Prayer Jar

You will need an empty jar, slips of paper, and a pencil. Give each child a slip to write a prayer request or a thank-you to God. They place the slip in the jar and take the jar home. Encourage families to read one prayer each evening together and remember that God hears every prayer, just as He heard Hannah’s.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God is holy, faithful, and in control of history. Hannah’s song proclaims that God humbles the proud and lifts up the humble, and that He keeps His promises across generations. Eli’s failure as a father warns us that faithfulness matters in our homes and in our leadership.

When teaching children, avoid overstating that God always gives us the exact material blessings we pray for or that obedience guarantees wealth. Keep the focus on God’s character and His faithfulness to those who love Him.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, we thank You that You hear our prayers and keep Your promises. Help us to honor You with our hearts, to obey You, and to trust You when things feel hard. Thank You for taking care of us every day. Amen.
