This lesson teaches children that Paul, a missionary who loved his friends in the city of Thessalonica, was thankful that they kept trusting Jesus even when life was hard. It is designed for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God helps us stand strong and keep loving each other, even when things are hard. Our faith can grow when we trust Jesus together.

Memory Verse

1 Thessalonians 3:8

For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord.

(WEB)

Have children stand tall with feet planted wide, like a tree with strong roots. Let them sway gently side to side and then stop, holding still. Say “stand fast” together while they stay steady.

The Story: 1 Thessalonians 3 for Kids

Paul had been a friend to the people in Thessalonica. He had taught them about Jesus, and many of them had believed. But then trouble came, and Paul had to leave the city. He missed his friends very much, and he worried about them.

Paul could not stand the waiting any longer. So he sent his friend Timothy to visit the believers. Timothy was a faithful helper who loved Jesus. His job was to encourage them and help their faith stay strong. Paul said, in his own simple way, “Do not be shaken by these hard times, because we all know that trouble is part of following Jesus.”

Later, Timothy came back to Paul with good news. The Thessalonian friends still trusted Jesus. They loved each other. They also remembered Paul and wanted to see him again. Paul was so glad that he cried tears of joy and thanked God.

Paul prayed every night and every day that he would get to see his friends again. He wanted to help them grow stronger in their faith. He asked God to help the people love each other more and more, and to love everyone around them.

Paul ended by asking God to make their hearts clean and good, ready to meet Jesus when He comes back. Paul trusted that God would finish the good work He had started in them.

Read It Together

1 Thessalonians 3:12

And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we also do toward you…

(WEB)

Point out that Paul prayed the Lord would help the people love one another more and more. Ask children who they can show love to this week at home, at school, or at church.

1 Thessalonians 3:13

To the end he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

(WEB)

Show children that God is the one who makes our hearts strong and clean. Explain that we do not have to be perfect on our own, because God is working in us.

Talk About It

  • What is something that made Paul sad in this story, and how did he handle it?
  • How did Timothy help the believers in Thessalonica, and how can we help our friends?
  • What did Paul pray for the people, and why do you think he asked God for that?
  • When has it been hard for you to keep trusting Jesus, and who helped you?
  • What are some ways we can show love to people who are different from us?

Activity Ideas

Strong Tree Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Have children draw a tall tree with thick roots going deep into the ground. On the roots, they can write or draw things that help them stand strong, like prayer, church, or family. Talk together about how roots keep a tree steady when the wind blows.

Stand Fast Freeze Game

You will need an open space and a little music or a clap. Children dance or walk around freely. When the music stops or you clap, they freeze and say “stand fast in the Lord.” Repeat several times, and let children take turns being the leader who calls out the freeze.

Love Notes Take-Home

You will need small paper squares, a pen, and an envelope for each child. Children write or draw one way they will show love this week, such as helping a sibling or saying a kind word. They place the note in the envelope and take it home to remind them to keep loving others as Paul prayed.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows Paul’s deep care for a young church. He was willing to be separated from his friends, yet he kept praying for them and wanting their faith to grow. The passage highlights that spiritual strength comes from God, who establishes hearts and increases love among believers.

Avoid suggesting to children that trouble will disappear if they have enough faith. Paul told the Thessalonians that suffering is part of following Jesus. Help children understand that God is with us in hard times, rather than promising that hard times will never come.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Jesus, thank You for helping us stand strong in our faith. Please help us love our friends and family more and more, just like Paul prayed. Keep our hearts clean and ready for You. Amen.
