In this lesson, children learn that God sees how people treat each other and that he is fair, so he will not ignore wrong choices. It is meant for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Use a simple story, a few verses, and some hands-on activities to help the truth stick.

Big Idea

God sees everything, and he cares when people are unkind or unfair. He always does what is right, and he always keeps his promises.

Memory Verse

Amos 5:24

But let justice roll on like rivers, and righteousness like a mighty stream.

(WEB)

Stand up tall and then wave both hands slowly like rolling water. Say the words together while you wave, then sit down. Doing this each time helps children remember that God wants justice to flow like water.

The Story: Amos 2 for Kids

Long ago, God sent a shepherd named Amos to tell people some important news. Amos did not have a fancy job. He took care of sheep and grew fruit from trees. But God chose him to speak for God. The first people Amos talked about were the people of Moab. God said that Moab had been very cruel, and God would not forget what they did.

Next, God talked about Judah, the land where his own people lived. Judah had turned away from God’s law and had chosen to follow lies. God said that he would send a fire that would reach even the great palaces in Jerusalem. This was a serious warning for God’s own family.

Then God spoke to Israel, and his words were very sad. Some rich people in Israel had sold poor people for just a little money, even for the price of a pair of shoes. They walked on the poor like they were dirt. God said, “I have not forgotten what you have done.” These people had forgotten that God is fair and loves those who are weak.

God did not forget all the good things he had done for Israel either. He had led them out of Egypt and taken care of them for forty years in the wilderness. He had even given them prophets to tell them the truth and Nazirites who made special promises to God. But the people did not listen. They gave the Nazirites wine and told the prophets to stop speaking. God was not happy with that at all.

In the end, God said that the strong and fast people would not be able to run away or save themselves. Nothing could protect them from his judgment. God’s words came true because he always keeps his word, even when it is hard to hear.

Read It Together

Amos 2:6

The LORD says: “For three transgressions of Israel, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes…

Point out that God saw how the rich people treated the poor. Ask children what it means to be fair, and remind them that God notices when people are treated unfairly.

Amos 2:11

I raised up some of your sons for prophets, and some of your young men for Nazirites. Isn’t this true, you children of Israel?” says the LORD.

(WEB)

Show children that God gave his people prophets to speak the truth and special helpers like the Nazirites. Explain that God wants us to listen when he speaks, even when the message is hard.

Amos 2:14-16

14 Flight will perish from the swift; and the strong won’t strengthen his force; neither shall the mighty deliver himself; 15 neither shall he stand who handles the bow; and he who is swift of foot won’t escape; neither shall he who rides the horse deliver himself; 16 and he who is courageous among the mighty will flee away naked on that day,” says the LORD.

(WEB)

Help children see that no one can hide from God or run away from him. Point out that God is strong and fair, and he keeps his promises, which can be a comfort to those who trust him.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing God saw in this chapter that made him sad?
  • How do you think the poor people felt when they were treated unfairly?
  • Why is it good to know that God sees everything we do?
  • What is one way you can be fair to a friend or family member this week?
  • How can we tell God that we want to do what is right?

Activity Ideas

Draw a Rolling Water Picture

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a wide blue river across the page, with small waves on top. Then have them draw a few people standing on the riverbank, showing them being treated kindly. Talk together about how justice is like water that flows and keeps things clean. Let children take turns explaining their drawing to the group.

Scale of Fairness Game

You will need a coat hanger, two paper cups, string, and some small objects like coins or pebbles. Tie the cups to each end of the hanger so it balances. Explain that God wants fairness on both sides of the scale. Let children place pebbles in each cup and see how the scale tips. Talk about how God helps us keep things even when we treat each other with kindness.

Fairness Reminder Card

You will need an index card, a pen, and a small sticker. Have each child write the words “God sees me and loves fairness” on the card, decorating it with the sticker. Encourage them to take it home and place it somewhere they will see it, like on the bedroom door or in a lunch box. Suggest they read it aloud each morning as a reminder to treat others well.

Teacher Notes

Amos was a shepherd who spoke God’s words to a divided nation, and his message in chapter 2 shows that God holds everyone accountable, including his own people. For adults, the passage is a call to examine how we treat the weak and whether we truly listen to God’s voice. It also reveals a God who remembers his faithful acts and expects his people to respond with obedience and justice.

With children, avoid making the chapter sound like it is only about punishment. Be careful not to suggest that God is quick to anger or that he delights in destruction. Emphasize that God is patient, fair, and always keeping his word, and that he invites us to turn toward him and do what is right.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you for seeing everything we do, and for loving fairness and kindness. Help us to treat others the way you want us to, especially those who are weak or left out. Teach us to listen when you speak and to do what is right every day. We trust you to keep your promises. Amen.
