This lesson teaches children that God knows the future and keeps His promises, so we can trust Him and keep doing right even when things feel scary or confusing. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God is in charge of everything, even the things we don’t understand, so we can trust Him and keep doing what is right.

Memory Verse

Daniel 12:3

Those who are wise will shine as the brightness of the expanse. Those who turn many to righteousness will shine as the stars forever and ever.

(WEB)

Hold both hands up like a bright star shining. Wiggle your fingers to show the sparkle. Then say the verse together three times while the sparkling hands stay up high.

The Story: Daniel 12 for Kids

Daniel was an old man who had seen many strange dreams and visions from God. One day he saw two angels standing by a river. One of them was dressed in white linen, and he lifted both hands up to the sky. Daniel wanted to know how long these hard times would last.

The angel promised that God’s people would go through a time of trouble. But he also said that God would rescue everyone whose name was written in His book. Daniel heard all of this, but he still did not fully understand what was going to happen.

Daniel asked, “My lord, what will happen at the end of all these things?” The angel answered, “Go your way, Daniel, because these words are sealed until the end time.” God wanted Daniel to trust Him even when the whole story was not clear yet.

The angel told Daniel that many people would make themselves clean and pure. Those who were wise would understand God’s plan. Those who lived for God would shine brightly, like stars that never stop glowing. Daniel was not left alone, because God was keeping track of every person who belonged to Him.

At the very end, the angel said something kind to Daniel. He told him to keep going faithfully until the end, and that Daniel would rest and receive his reward. God had a special place ready for Daniel, and He will keep His promises to His people too.

Read It Together

Daniel 12:1

“At that time Michael will stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people; and there will be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time. At that time your people will be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book.

Point out that God has a helper named Michael who stands up for His people. Ask the children what it feels like to know someone strong is protecting them.

Daniel 12:4

But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end. Many will run back and forth, and knowledge will be increased.”

(WEB)

Show the children that God told Daniel to close up the book until the right time. Explain that some things God shares with us slowly, and we can wait on Him patiently.

Daniel 12:13

“But go you your way until the end; for you will rest, and will stand in your inheritance at the end of the days.”

(WEB)

Highlight the promise that Daniel would rest and receive his inheritance. Point out that God gives His faithful people a wonderful ending, and this is a promise children can hold onto.

Talk About It

  • What is something about the future that you wish you could know right now?
  • How do you think Daniel felt when he heard the angel’s words but could not understand them?
  • Who are some people you know who shine brightly for God by how they act?
  • What does it mean to trust God when we do not understand what is happening?
  • What are some ways we can keep doing what is right, even when it is hard?

Activity Ideas

Shining Star Craft

You will need paper, scissors, crayons or markers, glitter glue, and a pencil. Trace a star shape onto the paper, cut it out, and let the children decorate it with bright colors and glitter. As they work, talk about how God’s people shine like stars when they stay faithful. Hang the finished stars somewhere the children can see them every day.

Stand Strong Movement Game

You will need an open space and a few chairs. Play a simple “Stand Strong” game where the children walk around the room and freeze when you say “Stand strong!” They must hold a steady pose, like the angel standing by the river. Repeat several times, and each round, explain that God keeps His people steady even in hard times.

Star Reminder Card

You will need a small piece of card stock, a marker, and a hole punch with a piece of yarn. Help each child write the memory verse on one side and draw a small star on the other. Punch a hole at the top, thread the yarn through, and let them take it home. Encourage them to read it at bedtime as a reminder that God keeps His promises.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God sees the whole story from beginning to end, even when we only see part of it. Daniel received a message he could not fully grasp, yet he was still assured that God would keep His people safe and give them a restful ending. The passage invites believers to trust God’s timing and faithfulness in every season.

When teaching children, avoid overstating the exact timeline of the events described, since the chapter’s numbers and details are debated among scholars and are beyond what young children need to understand. Focus instead on God’s faithfulness and the call to keep doing right.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Jesus, thank You for knowing everything that will happen. Help us to trust You even when we do not understand. Make us bright like stars by how we live and love others. Thank You that You will always keep Your promises to us. Amen.
