In this lesson, children learn that God is always ready to welcome His people back when they turn to Him, and that loving Him is near, not far away. It suits ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, with a short story, a few Bible verses, and a simple activity.
Big Idea
God wants us to come back to Him and love Him with our whole heart. He is close to us, and He makes it possible for us to choose Him every day.
Memory Verse
Deuteronomy 30:14
But the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.
(WEB)
Touch your mouth, then touch your heart, then point to your head like you are thinking. Say the verse slowly with the motions, and it will help children remember that God’s word is close to them, in their mouth and in their heart.
The Story: Deuteronomy 30 for Kids
Moses was getting ready to say goodbye to the people of Israel. They had walked through the wilderness for many years, and now they stood at the edge of a new land. Moses wanted them to remember one important thing: God had set two roads in front of them. One road led to life and blessing, and the other led to trouble.
Moses knew the people would sometimes wander away from God. They might be far from home, scattered among other nations, and feel lost. But Moses told them that God would never stop loving them. If they turned back to Him with all their heart and all their soul, God would bring them home. He would gather them together from every place they had been carried off to.
God did not ask for something impossible. Moses told the people that the command was not too hard, and it was not far away over the sea or up in the sky. It was close, right in their own mouths and hearts. They only needed to listen and do what God had said.
Then Moses gave them a choice. He said, “Today I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life.” He wanted them to love the LORD their God, to listen to His voice, and to hold tightly to Him. God was their life, and He would lead them into the good land He had promised long ago to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Read It Together
Deuteronomy 30:2
And return to the LORD your God, and obey his voice according to all that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart, and with all your soul…
(WEB)
Point out the word “return.” Explain that coming back to God is like walking home after getting lost, and that God is always waiting for us to turn toward Him.
Deuteronomy 30:11-14
11 For this commandment which I command you today is not too hard for you or too distant. 12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, “Who will go up for us to heaven, and bring it to us, and proclaim it to us, that we may do it?” 13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, “Who will go over the sea for us, and bring it to us, and proclaim it to us, that we may do it?” 14 But the word is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.
(WEB)
Show children that God’s command is not hidden far away. Ask them to point to their mouth and heart as you read, and explain that God’s word is near enough to hear, speak, and live out every day.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20
19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore choose life, that you may live, you and your descendants; 20 to love the LORD your God, to obey his voice, and to cling to him; for he is your life, and the length of your days; that you may dwell in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

Help children see that God gives a real choice between life and death. Explain that choosing life means loving God, listening to Him, and holding on to Him, and that He is our life.
Talk About It
- What does it mean to “return” to God, and what do you think that looks like on a normal school day?
- Why do you think God says His command is near us, in our mouths and hearts, instead of far away?
- When Moses told the people to choose life, what are some everyday choices you can make that show you love God?
- How do you feel knowing that God wants to bring His people home, even when they have wandered far?
- What is one way you can hold on to God this week when you feel tempted to do something wrong?
Activity Ideas
Paper Path Home Craft
You will need construction paper, crayons, scissors, and glue. Have each child draw a winding path on a sheet of paper, with a house or a heart at the end. Let them color a road of blessings on one side and a road of trouble on the other, then talk about how God calls us back to the path that leads home to Him.
Near and Close Movement Game
You will need an open space and a few small objects like a ball or a stuffed animal. Hide the objects close to the children, perhaps right in front of them, and have them search while you say, “The word is very near to you.” Then ask them to move their hands to their mouth and heart. Finish by reminding them that God is always close enough to hear.
Take-Home Heart Reminder
You will need paper hearts, markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to write the word “Choose” or “Life” on their heart and place it somewhere they will see each morning, such as on the fridge or by their bed. Encourage them to talk with their family about one way they can choose God that day.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Deuteronomy 30 shows that God invites His people to return to Him, and He does not leave them stranded in their failures. The command to love and obey Him is presented as near and possible, grounded in God’s own work of gathering and renewing His people. It is also a clear call to make a real choice between life and death.
Be careful not to suggest to children that God’s love depends on how well they behave. Speak instead of God’s faithfulness, His desire to bring us home, and His kindness in making His word close to us. The lesson is about returning to a loving Father, not earning His affection.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You that You are always near to us. Help us turn back to You when we wander, and help us love You with all our hearts. Show us how to choose life each day and to hold on to You. Thank You for bringing us home. Amen.
