Deuteronomy 32 teaches children that God is a faithful Rock who never breaks his promises, even when his people forget him. This lesson works for kids ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach. It uses a song Moses sings to remind Israel who God is.

Big Idea

God is always faithful and good, even when we forget him. He takes care of us the way a loving parent or a strong rock keeps us safe.

Memory Verse

Deuteronomy 32:4

The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are just. A God of faithfulness who does no wrong, just and right is he.

Put one fist on top of the other like a rock, then tap your top fist twice on your bottom fist as you say, “God is the Rock.” Ask the children to copy the motion each time they say the verse together.

The Story: Deuteronomy 32 for Kids

Near the end of his life, Moses stood before the people of Israel. They were about to cross the Jordan River into the land God had promised them. Moses knew they would need to remember God once he was gone, so he gave them a song to sing.

In the song, Moses reminded them of all the good things God had done. God had found his people in a dry, empty desert, where it was hot and lonely. He had cared for them and kept them safe, like a mother eagle who carries her babies on her wings. God gave them food and water, even honey from the rock.

But the people did not always remember God. They grew full and comfortable, and then they turned away to other gods that could not help them. Moses said, “You have forgotten God who gave you birth.” God was sad about this, but he did not stop loving them.

Moses told them that God is the Rock, and his work is perfect. Everything he does is fair and true. Even when his people were in trouble, God said he would not let them be destroyed forever. He would be merciful to his servants.

After Moses finished singing the song, he told the people to remember every word and to teach it to their children. The words of God’s law were not a waste of time. They were life for the people. Then God told Moses it was time for him to go up a mountain and see the land from far away, but not enter it.

Moses did as God asked. The people were left with a song to remind them that God was faithful, even when they were not.

Read It Together

Deuteronomy 32:10-12

10 He found him in a desert land, in the waste howling wilderness. He surrounded him. He cared for him. He kept him as the apple of his eye. 11 As an eagle that stirs up her nest, that flutters over her young, he spread abroad his wings, he took them, he bore them on his feathers. 12 The LORD alone led him. There was no foreign god with him.

Point out how God found his people in a lonely desert and took care of them like an eagle protecting her babies. Ask the children to name a time they felt safe with someone who loves them.

Deuteronomy 32:18

Of the Rock who became your father, you are unmindful, and have forgotten God who gave you birth.

Explain that the people forgot the God who made them. Talk about how easy it is to forget God when life is going well, and how we can remember him again.

Deuteronomy 32:39

“See now that I myself am he. There is no god with me. I kill and I make alive. I wound and I heal. There is no one who can deliver out of my hand.

Show the children that God says he is the only one who can help us. Remind them that God is always with us, and nothing is too hard for him.

Talk About It

  • What are some ways God took care of the people of Israel in the desert?
  • Why do you think the people forgot about God when things got easy for them?
  • How is God like a rock in your life? What does a rock help us do?
  • What is one thing God has done for you this week that you can thank him for?
  • How can we remember God’s faithfulness when we feel scared or alone?

Activity Ideas

Paper Rock Craft

Give each child a piece of gray construction paper and some glue. Let them tear the paper into small pieces and glue them onto a paper plate to make a rock shape. Have them write “God is my Rock” in the middle with a marker. Encourage them to keep it on their bedroom wall as a reminder.

Eagle Wings Game

Have the children stand in a circle with their arms spread out like eagle wings. Choose one child to be a baby eagle who stands in the middle. The other children flap their wings gently around the baby while the group says the memory verse. Switch the baby eagle every few rounds so everyone gets a turn.

Take-Home Reminder Jar

Give each child a small jar and some strips of paper. Ask them to write one thing God has done for them on each strip and fold it up. They can keep adding strips all week. Encourage them to read a few aloud at dinner to thank God for his faithfulness.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Deuteronomy 32 shows that God’s faithfulness does not depend on our faithfulness. Israel repeatedly turned away, yet God remained their Rock and Father. The song is a reminder that God’s justice and mercy are both real, and that he keeps his promises across generations.

With children, avoid overstating the harsh judgment in the middle of the chapter. Focus on God’s care and his unchanging character, and keep the warnings simple and age-appropriate.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you that you are our faithful Rock. Help us remember you when things are good and when things are hard. Thank you for caring for us like a loving parent and keeping us safe. Help us trust you every day. Amen.
