This lesson teaches children that God wants His people to stay faithful to Him and not chase after other gods. It is written for children aged 5 to 11, and the lesson takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God wants us to love Him more than anything else. When we run after other things instead, we hurt our hearts and our friendship with Him, but God never stops calling us back home.
Memory Verse
Hosea 9:1
Don’t rejoice, Israel, to jubilation like the nations; for you were unfaithful to your God. You love the wages of a prostitute at every grain threshing floor.

Put your hands on your heart and then open them wide, like you are giving your love away. Say the verse together while you do the motion, so the words and the action stay in your heart.
The Story: Hosea 9 for Kids
Long ago, the people of Israel were supposed to belong to God alone. But they wanted what other nations had, so they began to worship idols and chase after things that could never truly help them. God saw this, and He was very sad about it. He knew they had turned away from Him, even though He had cared for them like a gardener cares for sweet grapes.
The prophet Hosea told the people what would happen because of their choices. The harvest would fail. There would be no good wine and no bread to share. Some families would have to leave their own land and go to faraway places where they did not belong. Hosea was not happy to share these hard words, but he spoke them because he loved his people and wanted them to come back.
The people did not want to listen. Some of them even thought Hosea was foolish for warning them. They did not believe that God would really do what He said. They kept doing things that broke God’s heart, and the consequences grew bigger and bigger.
God was not finished with His people, though. He still wanted them to come home. He said that He would one day bring them back to Himself, because He never forgets the people He loves. Even when we make big mistakes, God is still waiting for us with open arms.
Read It Together
Hosea 9:10
I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at its first season; but they came to Baal Peor, and consecrated themselves to the shameful thing, and became abominable like that which they loved.

Point out how God remembers the good times with His people, comparing them to sweet grapes and early figs. Ask the children to notice that God delights in His people and is sad when they wander away from Him.
Hosea 9:15
“All their wickedness is in Gilgal; for there I hated them. Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of my house! I will love them no more. All their princes are rebels.

Show the children that the people had turned their hearts away from God. Explain that this verse is about the consequences of choosing wrong things, and that God wants us to keep choosing Him.
Hosea 9:17
My God will cast them away, because they did not listen to him; and they will be wanderers among the nations.
(WEB)
Talk about what it feels like to wander away from home. Remind the children that God’s people had wandered, but God still loves them and invites them to return to Him.
Talk About It
- What are some things that people sometimes love more than God, and how can we tell when that is happening?
- How do you think God felt when His people turned away from Him?
- What is one way you can show God that you love Him today?
- Why do you think the people did not want to listen to Hosea when he warned them?
- What does it mean that God never stops calling His people back to Him?
Activity Ideas
Heart Drawing Craft
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and scissors. Have each child trace a large heart on the paper and cut it out. Ask them to draw or write one thing they want to love God with, and tape the heart somewhere the family will see it each day.
Follow the Shepherd Game
Choose one child to be the shepherd and have the rest be sheep spread around the room. The shepherd calls out “Come home!” and the sheep run back to them. Play a few rounds, talking afterward about how God calls us back to Him even after we wander off.
Take-Home Prayer Card
Give each child an index card and a pencil. Ask them to write or draw a simple promise to God, like “I will love you first.” Encourage them to keep the card on their bedside table and read it together with a parent or guardian before bed.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God’s love is serious and His warnings are real, yet His desire is always to restore His people. Idolatry in Hosea’s day meant trusting in false gods for blessings, and the same temptation to rely on lesser things still exists today. The chapter reminds us that unfaithfulness has consequences, but that God’s heart is still turned toward His people in mercy.
When teaching children, avoid overstating the harshness of the judgment or making God seem angry all the time. Keep the focus on God’s faithful love and His invitation to return, so that children feel safe and hopeful rather than afraid.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, we want to love You with all of our hearts. Help us to remember that You are always faithful to us, even when we wander. Please keep calling us back to You each day. Amen.
