This lesson teaches children that God chose a special servant who brings justice and light to the whole world, and that God keeps His promises. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God chose a gentle servant to bring light and fairness to everyone, and God never gives up on the people He loves. He is always faithful, even when we feel lost in the dark.

Memory Verse

Isaiah 42:6

“I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you, and make you a covenant for the people, as a light for the nations…

(WEB)

Hold both hands out in front of you, palms up, like you are holding a small candle. Slowly lift them up as you say the words together. Then wiggle your fingers like the light is shining everywhere.

The Story: Isaiah 42 for Kids

Long ago, God spoke through a prophet named Isaiah. God told the people about a servant He had chosen, someone He loved very much. God said He had put His Spirit on this servant, so the servant would bring fairness to the whole world.

God said this servant would be very gentle. He would not shout in the streets or make a lot of noise. If he found someone who was bruised or weak, like a broken reed in a field, he would not break them any more. If a little candle flame was barely burning, he would not blow it out.

God also spoke to the people He had made. He reminded them that He created the heavens, the earth, and every person who breathes. Then God said, “I, the LORD, have called you, and I will hold your hand and keep you safe.” God promised to be a light for many nations and to help people who were trapped in the dark.

The people had been listening to idols made of wood and metal instead of to God. God told them clearly, “I am the LORD. That is my name, and I will not share my glory with false gods.” He reminded them that He had told them the old things would happen, and now He was telling them about new things coming.

God wanted His people to sing a brand new song of praise to Him. He wanted the sea, the islands, the mountains, and the villages to join in. Even the wilderness would sing, because God is strong, like a mighty warrior who wins every battle for those He loves.

God’s people had been like someone who could not see or hear the truth. Even so, God still loved them and promised to bring them home. He wanted them to remember that He would never forsake them.

Read It Together

Isaiah 42:3

He won’t break a bruised reed. He won’t quench a dimly burning wick. He will faithfully bring justice.

(WEB)

Point out how gently God’s servant treats people who are weak or hurting. Ask the children to name things that are bruised or fragile, and talk about how God’s care is always kind and careful.

Isaiah 42:16

I will bring the blind by a way that they don’t know. I will lead them in paths that they don’t know. I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight. I will do these things, and I will not forsake them.

(WEB)

Show the children that God leads people even when they cannot see the path ahead. Remind them that God turns darkness into light and makes crooked places straight for those who trust Him.

Isaiah 42:10

Sing to the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is therein, the islands and their inhabitants.

(WEB)

Explain that God invites everyone to sing a new song of praise, from the ocean to the mountains. Ask the children to think of a happy song they know and how it might sound as praise to God.

Talk About It

  • What did God promise to do for the servant He chose, and why do you think God chose him?
  • How would you feel if someone treated you as gently as God’s servant treats a bruised reed?
  • When have you felt like you were in the dark, and how can you remember that God is with you?
  • Why do you think God says He will not share His glory with anything made of wood or metal?
  • What new song of praise could you sing to God today, and who could you invite to sing with you?

Activity Ideas

Paper Light Craft

You will need construction paper, markers, scissors, and a few cotton balls or tissue paper. Have each child draw a simple candle or lamp on paper, then glue tissue paper flames on top. As they work, talk about how God’s servant brings light, and let them place their finished candle on a windowsill as a reminder.

Gentle Servant Game

Play a quiet game where one child is the gentle servant and walks slowly around the room with a soft blanket over their shoulders. The other children stand still, pretending to be fragile like reeds, and the servant gently taps each one on the shoulder to say they are safe. Afterward, talk about how it felt to be treated with kindness.

Take-Home Promise Card

You will need index cards, crayons, and a hole punch with a ribbon. Have each child write or draw one reason God is faithful, like “God holds my hand.” Punch a hole in the corner, tie the ribbon through it, and encourage them to hang the card on their bedroom door so they remember God’s promise each day.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Isaiah 42 presents a servant chosen by God, filled with His Spirit, who brings justice and light to the nations. Christians have long read this passage as pointing forward to Jesus, the one who shows gentle care for the weak and brings God’s light into the world. The chapter also shows God’s faithfulness to Israel even when they have been spiritually blind and disobedient.

Avoid overstating to children that every hard moment will be instantly fixed or that God will always remove every difficulty. Keep the focus on God’s steady presence and faithful character, which is the true comfort this chapter offers.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for being gentle and faithful to us. Help us to be kind to people who are hurting, and help us remember that You are always our light. Thank You for holding our hands and never letting us go. Amen.
