This lesson teaches children that God never forgets the people He loves, even when they feel alone. It works well for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the verses, and the activity.

Big Idea

God remembers His children every day. He never forgets us, even when we feel forgotten, and He is always keeping us close to Him.

Memory Verse

Isaiah 49:15

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you!

(WEB)

Ask children to hold both hands up, palms facing out, and wiggle their fingers slowly as they say the verse together. Then have them put one hand over their heart and say “I will not forget you” a second time, softly.

The Story: Isaiah 49 for Kids

Long ago, God spoke through a prophet named Isaiah. The people of Israel had been taken far away from their home, and many of them felt sad and lost. They wondered if God had left them behind.

God had a special message for His people. He reminded them that He had chosen them before they were even born. He told them they were His servants, and He would help them come home again. Their hard times would not last forever.

But the people felt discouraged. Zion, the city of God, said, “The LORD has forgotten me.” It sounded like the people had given up hope. Many of them thought they were all alone in a strange land.

God answered them with a loving question. He asked, “Can a mother forget the baby she is feeding?” Most mothers would say no. Then God said, “Even if a mother could forget, I will never forget you!”

God also promised something wonderful. He said He had written His people on the palms of His hands. Their walls were always in His sight. Their children would come back, and their enemies would go away. God would bring them home.

In the end, God said that the whole world would see that He is the Lord who saves. He would take care of His people, lead them to good places, and bring them comfort. Nothing could stop Him from keeping His promise.

Read It Together

Isaiah 49:1-2

1 Listen, islands, to me. Listen, you peoples, from afar: The LORD has called me from the womb; from the inside of my mother he has mentioned my name. 2 He has made my mouth like a sharp sword. He has hidden me in the shadow of his hand. He has made me a polished shaft. He has kept me close in his quiver.

(WEB)

Point out that God called Isaiah before he was born and made him ready to speak for Him. Explain that God knows each of us by name and has a plan for our lives, even when we are very young.

Isaiah 49:13

Sing, heavens; and be joyful, earth; and break out into singing, mountains: for the LORD has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his afflicted.

(WEB)

Show children that God is so happy to comfort His people that the whole creation sings. Ask them to imagine the sky, the earth, and the mountains all joining in a happy song.

Isaiah 49:16

Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. your walls are continually before me.

(WEB)

Help children see that God says His people are written on His hands. Explain that God keeps His people close and never puts them out of His mind, even when they feel far away.

Talk About It

  • How might the people in Israel have felt when they thought God had forgotten them?
  • What is something you remember very well, and how does it feel to be remembered by someone?
  • Why do you think God used a mother feeding her baby to show how much He loves us?
  • What are some ways you can tell someone else that they are not forgotten?
  • When you feel alone or sad, what is one thing you can do to remember that God is with you?

Activity Ideas

Handprint Reminder Craft

You will need construction paper, crayons or markers, scissors, and glue. Have each child trace their hand on the paper and cut it out. On the palm, they can write or draw something that reminds them God knows them. Glue the handprint to a card and bring it home as a reminder.

Lead Me Home Game

Choose one child to be a blindfolded traveler, and have another child be the guide who calls out directions, like “step forward” or “turn left.” Explain that God guides His people home, even when the road is hard. Let each child take a turn being the traveler and the guide.

Remember Me Card

You will need a small index card and a pencil for each child. Ask them to draw a picture of someone who loves them, then write “God never forgets me” at the bottom. Encourage them to keep the card in a pocket, backpack, or by their bed to look at during the week.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter speaks to people who feel abandoned, displaced, or forgotten by life’s hardships. God answers their fear with a promise of faithful, personal remembrance, and He points to His own commitment as the basis for hope. The chapter also shows God’s plan to bring blessing far beyond Israel, to the nations and to the ends of the earth.

With children, avoid overstating what the story means for their own circumstances, such as promising that every hard situation will end quickly or that prayer will always change what happens. Instead, focus on God’s steady love and faithfulness, and let children know that feelings of being forgotten are real and can be shared with a trusted adult.

A Prayer to Close

Father, thank You that You never forget us. When we feel alone or sad, help us remember that You know our names and hold us close. Keep us safe in Your care every day. Amen.
