This lesson teaches children that God comforts His people and keeps His promises forever, even when they feel scared or sad. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God is our comforter. When we feel afraid, we can remember that God made us, He keeps His promises, and He is always with us.
Memory Verse
Isaiah 51:12
“I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you, that you are afraid of man who shall die, and of the son of man who will be made as grass?

Put both hands on your chest, then slowly open your arms wide like a hug. Say the words together as you move, so children remember that God’s comfort wraps around them.
The Story: Isaiah 51 for Kids
Long ago, God’s people, the Israelites, were far away from their home in Jerusalem. They had been taken to a faraway land, and they felt very sad and worried. Some of them wondered if God had forgotten them.
God sent a prophet named Isaiah to speak to His people. Isaiah told them to look back at their history. He reminded them that God had called their father Abraham when he had no children, and God blessed him and made his family grow into a great nation. God never forgets the people He chooses.
Then Isaiah shared a special message. God said, “I, even I, am he who comforts you.” God wanted His people to know that they did not need to be afraid of people who could hurt them, because those people would not last forever. God’s promises will last forever.
Isaiah also told them to think about how big God is. God made the heavens and the earth, and He can even dry up the sea. If God is that powerful, He can certainly take care of His people. He promised that those He rescues will come home with singing and joy, and that sadness and sighing will go away.
God told His people that He would take away the cup of His anger that they had been carrying. He would give it to those who had treated His people unfairly. God’s people could stop being afraid, because God was going to rescue them.
Read It Together
Isaiah 51:3
For the LORD has comforted Zion. He has comforted all her waste places, and has made her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.
(WEB)
Point out how God takes a dry, empty desert and makes it look like a beautiful garden. Ask children what kinds of things make them feel happy and thankful, and remind them that God brings joy and singing into hard places.
Isaiah 51:7-8
7 “Listen to me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law: Don’t fear the reproach of men, and don’t be dismayed at their insults. 8 For the moth will eat them up like a garment, and the worm will eat them like wool; but my righteousness will be forever, and my salvation to all generations.”
(WEB)
Explain that people can say mean things, but those words do not last. God’s righteousness and salvation last forever. Help children name one way they can trust God when someone is unkind to them.
Isaiah 51:15-16
15 For I am the LORD your God, who stirs up the sea, so that its waves roar: The LORD of Armies is his name. 16 I have put my words in your mouth, and have covered you in the shadow of my hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and tell Zion, ‘You are my people.’”
(WEB)
Show children that God is powerful enough to stir up the roaring sea, and also close enough to cover His people in the shadow of His hand. Ask them to picture being held safe under a large, strong hand.
Talk About It
- What is one thing that makes you feel scared or worried sometimes?
- How did God comfort His people when they were far from home?
- Why do you think God says His promises will last forever?
- What does it feel like to be wrapped in a big, safe hug?
- How can you remind a friend that God is with them when they are sad?
Activity Ideas
Hand Print Comfort Card
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Have each child trace their hand on the paper, then write or draw one thing that comforts them inside the handprint. Explain that God’s hands hold us safe, just like the hand He covers us with in Isaiah 51. Let children take their card home to remember.
Garden Walk Movement Game
Clear some space in your room or outside. Have children start curled up small like a dry, empty desert. Then call out “Garden!” and have them slowly stand up, stretch their arms, and wiggle their fingers like flowers growing. Repeat a few times, reminding children that God turns dry places into gardens full of joy.
Stone Reminder at Home
Gather a small smooth stone for each child, or let them choose one from outside. Let them decorate it with a marker or paint and write the word “Comforted” on it. Explain that Isaiah reminded God’s people to look to the rock they were cut from, and this stone can remind them that God is their solid, unshakable rock at home.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Isaiah 51 is a message of hope to a people in exile who felt forgotten and afraid. God reminds them of His faithfulness through their history, calls them to trust His righteousness and salvation, and promises that His rescue will outlast every human threat. The chapter shows that God’s comfort is rooted in who He is, not in how strong His people feel.
When teaching children, avoid promising that God will remove every hard feeling or circumstance right away. Focus instead on God’s lasting faithfulness and His presence with us in hard times. Children should understand that comfort comes from trusting God, not from pretending that sad things never happen.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for being our comforter when we feel scared or sad. Help us remember that Your promises last forever and that You are always with us. Wrap us in Your loving arms and help us trust You every day. Amen.
