This lesson teaches children that God keeps His promises even when we feel forgotten, and that His love for His people never runs out. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a story, a memory verse, and a short activity.

Big Idea

God loves us so much that He never stops caring for us, even when we feel alone or sad. His love is steady, and He keeps His promises.

Memory Verse

Isaiah 54:10

For the mountains may depart, and the hills be removed; but my loving kindness will not depart from you, and my covenant of peace will not be removed,” says the LORD who has mercy on you.

(WEB)

Teach the children to hold both hands out flat, then slowly move them apart like the mountains moving, then bring them back together over their hearts. Say the words together while you move. Each time the motion shows that God’s love stays put even when the hills shake.

The Story: Isaiah 54 for Kids

Long ago, God spoke through a prophet named Isaiah to His people, the nation of Israel. They had been through hard times. Many of them were far from home, and they felt as if God had forgotten them. Some of them felt like a woman who had lost her husband and had no one to take care of her.

God wanted them to know that He had not forgotten. He told them, “Sing, you who have no children!” That might sound strange, but God was saying that He would bring many new people to live with them. He told them to make their tents bigger, because they were going to have many more neighbors and friends.

Then God spoke tenderly. He said, “For a small moment I have forsaken you, but with great mercy I will gather you.” Even when His people were sad, God was still making plans to bring them home and care for them. He compared His love to a promise He made long ago, like the promise He made to Noah that the waters would never again cover the whole earth.

God also said He would build His people up with beautiful things. He would give them walls of precious stones and gates that sparkled. More important than the jewels, God would teach their children Himself, and they would have peace. God promised that no weapon formed against them would finally win, because they belonged to Him.

Read It Together

Isaiah 54:4

“Don’t be afraid; for you will not be ashamed. Don’t be confounded; for you will not be disappointed. For you will forget the shame of your youth; and the reproach of your widowhood you shall remember no more.

(WEB)

Point out the words “Don’t be afraid.” Ask the children what makes them afraid sometimes. Explain that God speaks these words to His people because He is with them and will not let them be put to shame.

Isaiah 54:5

For your Maker is your husband; The LORD of Armies is his name. The Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer. He will be called the God of the whole earth.

(WEB)

Show the children that God is described as their Maker, their husband, and their Redeemer. Explain that a redeemer is someone who rescues and makes things right, and that God does this for His people.

Isaiah 54:13

All your children will be taught by the LORD; and your children’s peace will be great.

(WEB)

Point out that God promises to teach His people. Tell the children that learning about God is a gift, and that God is ready to teach them through prayer, Bible stories, and the people who love them.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing that made the people in this story feel sad or worried?
  • How did God show the people that He still cared about them?
  • Why do you think God compared His love to the promise He made to Noah?
  • What is a time when you felt afraid, and what helped you feel safe?
  • How can you remember that God is always with you, even when you cannot see Him?

Activity Ideas

Paper Stone Walls

You will need construction paper in several colors, glue, scissors, and a sheet of blue or brown paper for the background. Have each child cut out small rectangles and squares to look like stones. Ask them to glue the stones onto the background to build a wall or a city gate. As they work, talk about how God promised to build His people walls of beautiful stones. Let the children add a sparkly sticker or glitter to the gate.

Mountains and Hills Movement Game

You will need an open space where children can move safely. Ask the children to stand tall like mountains and then crouch low like hills. Call out “Mountains!” and “Hills!” in turn. Then have the children shake and sway as if the earth is moving. Finally, say, “But God’s love stays!” and have everyone freeze with arms wrapped around themselves. Repeat the game a few times so the children remember the message.

Take-Home Promise Card

You will need index cards or cardstock, markers, and a pencil. Write the words “God keeps His promises” on the front of the card, leaving room for the child to draw. Ask the children to draw a picture of something that reminds them God is with them, like a tree, a bed, or their family. Encourage them to show the card to someone at home and tell them what the lesson was about. Let them keep the card on a nightstand or in their backpack.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter is a letter of comfort to a people who felt abandoned and grieved. God uses the picture of a faithful husband and a redeemer to show that His commitment to His people is deeper than their feelings or circumstances. The promises of rebuilding, peace, and protection point forward to the security God gives His people, and Christians have long read this chapter in light of the faithfulness of God through Jesus.

With children, be careful not to overstate the picture of God as a husband. Young children may not understand the marriage imagery, so focus on the simple truths that God loves them, stays close, and keeps His word. Avoid suggesting that God will remove every hard thing from a child’s life, since the chapter speaks of God’s faithful presence and promises rather than a life free from struggle.

A Prayer to Close

Father, thank You that You never forget us and never stop loving us. When we feel sad or afraid, help us remember that You are with us. Teach us Your ways and give us peace. Keep us close to You all day long. Amen.
