This lesson teaches children that God gives wisdom to people who ask for it and look for it like a treasure. It is best for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Children can learn it with simple stories, a memory motion, and a few hands-on activities.
Big Idea
God is the one who gives wisdom, and we can ask Him for it. When we look for wisdom the way people look for silver or hidden treasure, we will find it and grow closer to God.
Memory Verse
Proverbs 2:6
For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
(WEB)
Cup both hands together like you are holding a gift. Then lift your hands up toward heaven as you say the words. This motion reminds children that wisdom is a gift that comes from God above.
The Story: Proverbs 2 for Kids
King Solomon wrote this chapter to teach his son. He wanted his son to learn that wisdom is very important. Solomon said, “My son, listen to me and keep my words close to your heart.” He wanted his son to pay close attention and think carefully about what is right.
Solomon told his son to look for wisdom the way a person digs for silver or searches for hidden treasure. People who want treasure work hard and never give up. Solomon said we should work hard to understand God and to learn what He wants us to know.
The chapter says that God is the one who gives wisdom. Good things come out of His mouth, including knowledge and understanding. God protects people who walk honestly and do what is right. He is like a shield that keeps them safe as they walk the right path.
Solomon also warned his son about people who choose to do evil. Some people love doing wrong and turn away from the good path. Solomon told his son to stay away from them, because their ways lead to trouble. He said, “Walk in the way of good people, and keep to the paths of those who do right.”
The chapter ends with a promise. People who love God and do what is right will live safely in the land. People who choose evil will not have that safety. Wisdom helps us choose the good path every single day.
Read It Together
Proverbs 2:1-5
1 My son, if you will receive my words, and store up my commandments within you; 2 So as to turn your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; 3 Yes, if you call out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding; 4 If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures: 5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
(WEB)
Point out the words “call out” and “seek her as silver.” Show children how a person searches hard for treasure, and explain that wisdom is worth looking for in the same way. Ask them what they would do to find something precious.
Proverbs 2:7-8
7 He lays up sound wisdom for the upright. He is a shield to those who walk in integrity; 8 that he may guard the paths of justice, and preserve the way of his saints.
(WEB)
Point out that God is a shield to those who walk with integrity. Explain that a shield protects us from harm, and that God keeps His people safe as they follow Him. Ask children how it feels to know God is protecting them.
Proverbs 2:20-21
20 That you may walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. 21 For the upright will dwell in the land. The perfect will remain in it.
(WEB)
Point out the words “walk in the way of good men” and “the upright will dwell in the land.” Explain that walking with good people helps us grow in wisdom. Help children name friends or family members who choose to do what is right.
Talk About It
- What is something you would work hard to find, and why?
- How can we ask God for wisdom when we are not sure what to do?
- Why do you think Solomon compared wisdom to silver and hidden treasure?
- Who are some people you know who choose to do what is right, and how do they help you?
- What is one choice you can make this week to follow God’s good path?
Activity Ideas
Treasure Chest Craft
You will need a small cardboard box, markers, aluminum foil, and paper. Have each child decorate the box and cover some paper scraps with foil to look like silver coins. Inside the box, write one word that describes wisdom, such as “kind,” “honest,” or “patient.” Explain that wisdom is a treasure we look for every day.
Shield Relay Game
You will need two pillows or sofa cushions and a open space in the room. Divide the children into two teams. Each child runs to the finish line holding a cushion over their head like a shield while another child tries to pass by. Tell them that God protects us like a shield when we walk in His ways.
Wisdom Walk Card
You will need index cards, a pen, and a stapler. Ask each child to write one good choice they will make this week on one side of the card. On the other side, they draw a path with a few steps. Encourage them to bring the card home and share it with someone in their family. This helps them remember to walk the good path all week.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Proverbs 2 teaches that wisdom is more than knowing facts. It is a gift from God that shapes how we think, speak, and act. The chapter invites us to pursue understanding with the same effort we would give to finding treasure, while trusting that the Lord is the source of it all.
Be careful not to suggest that children earn wisdom by working hard enough. Make it clear that God gives wisdom freely to those who ask, and that our effort is a response to His generosity. Children should hear that God delights to give wisdom, not that He rewards only the perfect.
A Prayer to Close
Lord God, thank You for being the giver of wisdom. Help us to listen to Your words and to keep them close to our hearts. Show us the good path and keep us safe as we walk with You. Help us to choose what is right each day. Amen.
