This lesson teaches children that they can tell God exactly how they feel, even when they are sad or confused, because God listens. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God wants to hear our true feelings, even the hard ones. We can talk to Him honestly, just like a child talks to a loving parent.
Memory Verse
Psalm 62:8
Trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. Selah.
(WEB)
Have children cup their hands together in front of their chest, then slowly open them upward like they are offering something to God. Say the verse together while you make the motion each time, and repeat it until the children can lead it themselves.
The Story: Job 10 for Kids
Job was a good man who loved God very much. But one terrible day, Job lost his children, his animals, his servants, and his health. He was hurting all over, and he felt very alone and very sad. Job did not understand why these hard things were happening to him.
Job felt so unhappy that he said he wished he had never been born. He did not hide his feelings. He told God, “Please do not be angry with me. Please show me why this is happening.” Job was honest about his pain, and he spoke to God from the bottom of his heart.
Job remembered that God had made him with great care, the way a potter shapes soft clay on a wheel. He reminded God that God had given him life and kindness. Job did not forget who God was, even while he was confused and hurting.
Job’s friends came to visit, but they did not always understand how he felt. Job kept talking to God anyway. He asked God to give him a little comfort before his life on earth came to an end. Job trusted that God was still listening, even when he could not see the answer yet.
Read It Together
Job 10:1
“My soul is weary of my life. I will give free course to my complaint. I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
(WEB)
Point out that Job says he will speak his complaint openly to God. Ask children to notice that Job did not keep his feelings inside. Explain that talking honestly to God is a way of trusting Him.
Job 10:12
You have granted me life and loving kindness. Your visitation has preserved my spirit.
(WEB)
Show children that even while Job was hurting, he remembered that God had given him life and loving kindness. Explain that remembering God’s goodness helps us keep our hearts strong when we feel sad.
Job 10:20-21
20 Aren’t my days few? Cease then. Leave me alone, that I may find a little comfort, 21 before I go where I shall not return from, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death…
(WEB)
Point out that Job asked God for a little comfort. Tell children that asking God for help when we feel bad is a good and right thing to do, and that God cares when we ask.
Talk About It
- What is something that makes you feel sad or worried sometimes?
- How did Job talk to God when he was hurting?
- Why do you think God wants us to be honest with Him about our feelings?
- What is one thing you could say to God the next time you feel scared?
- How can remembering that God made you with care help you feel better?
Activity Ideas
Feelings Clay Pot Craft
You will need modeling clay or play dough, a small paper cup, and crayons. Let each child press some clay into a small shape that shows a feeling they have had. Then have them place the clay in the cup and tell God about it in a quiet whisper, reminding them that God wants to hear everything.
Honest Feelings Movement Game
Gather the children in an open space and call out feelings like happy, sad, tired, or scared. For each feeling, the children act it out with their faces and bodies. After each one, say together, “God hears us,” and let them freeze in a calm pose while you pray a short sentence aloud.
Take-Home Prayer Jar
You will need an empty jar, paper slips, and a marker. Ask each child to write or draw one honest feeling on a slip of paper and place it in the jar at home. Encourage the family to read the slips together once a week and pray about them, showing that God is always ready to listen.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Job 10 shows that honest lament is a real and faithful way to approach God. Job does not pretend to be fine. He brings his anger, grief, and confusion directly to the Lord, while still addressing Him as the one who made and sustains him. This reminds us that faith can include hard questions and raw emotion.
Be careful not to suggest to children that God explains every hard thing that happens to them. Job never receives a full answer in this chapter, and God’s ways are bigger than our understanding. Focus instead on the truth that God listens and cares, even when we do not understand what He is doing.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for listening to us when we feel sad or scared. Help us tell You the truth about how we feel, just like Job did. Remind us that You made us with care and that You love us very much. We trust You to hear us. Amen.
