This lesson teaches children that God loves the whole world so much that He gave His Son Jesus, so everyone who believes in Him can have life that never ends. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God loves everyone so much that He sent Jesus to save us. When we trust Jesus, we get to live with God forever.
Memory Verse
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
(WEB)
Teach the children to hold both hands out in front of them, then bring them together and open them wide like a gift. As you say “God so loved the world,” they make the hug motion, and on “eternal life” they lift their arms up high like they’re reaching for the sky.
The Story: John 3 for Kids
One night a man named Nicodemus came to see Jesus. Nicodemus was a leader among the Jewish people, and he was curious about Jesus. He knew Jesus must come from God because of the amazing things Jesus did. So he came in the dark, probably so no one would see him visiting Jesus.
Jesus told Nicodemus that a person must be born again to see God’s kingdom. Nicodemus was puzzled. “How can a grown man go back into his mother’s body and be born again?” he asked. Jesus explained that He meant a new birth by the Spirit of God, a new life that comes from God Himself.
Jesus said the Spirit is like the wind. You can hear it blowing and see what it does, but you cannot see exactly where it comes from or where it goes. People who are born of the Spirit are like that too: their new life is real, even when we cannot see every part of how it happens.
Then Jesus shared one of the most famous promises in the whole Bible. He said that God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him would not be lost but would have life forever. Jesus came to save people, not to condemn them.
Read It Together
John 3:3
Jesus answered him, “Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see God’s Kingdom.”
(WEB)
Point out that Jesus says a person must be born again to see God’s kingdom. Explain that being born again means receiving a brand-new life from God, which happens when we trust Jesus. Help children see that this is something God does for us, not something we earn.
John 3:8
The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
(WEB)
Ask children to notice the comparison to the wind. Show them a ribbon or paper streamer, and let them feel the moving air. Explain that we cannot always see how God works, but we can see the good results of His work in people’s lives.
John 3:17
For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.
(WEB)
Point out that God did not send Jesus to punish the world, but to save it. Let children say the word “saved” together. Remind them that Jesus came to rescue people who need Him, including each child in the room.
Talk About It
- What do you think Nicodemus felt when Jesus said we must be born again?
- Why do you think Nicodemus came to see Jesus at night?
- How does it feel to know that God loves you that much?
- What is one way you can show someone that you believe in Jesus?
- What is something you cannot see, but you know is real, like the wind?
Activity Ideas
Wind Catcher Craft
You will need paper, crayons or markers, scissors, and yarn or string. Have each child draw a large swirl or spiral on paper and cut it out. Punch a hole at the top, tie on yarn, and let them hang their wind catcher somewhere it can move. Talk about how the wind moves things we cannot see.
Born Again Freeze Dance
You will need some upbeat music and open floor space. Play the music and have children dance freely. When the music stops, have them freeze and say, “God gives us new life!” Then start the music again. Let them move like they are growing and coming alive, reminding them that Jesus gives us a fresh start.
Light and Love Take-Home Card
You will need index cards, a pen or marker, and a small flashlight or tea light if you have one. Have each child write “God so loved the world” on one side of the card and draw a small light bulb or sun on the other. Encourage them to read the card to someone at home that week and share one thing they learned about God’s love.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that new life comes from God through the Spirit, not from human effort. Nicodemus was a religious teacher who struggled to understand spiritual truths, and Jesus met him with patience and clear words. The passage ends with the wonderful promise that God’s motive for sending Jesus was love, and that salvation is offered to all who believe.
Avoid overstating to children that every question about how the Spirit works has a simple answer. Some aspects of God’s ways remain mysterious, as the wind image suggests. It is better to focus on the clear truths: God loves us, Jesus saves us, and we can trust Him.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for loving us so much. Thank You for sending Jesus to save us and give us new life. Help us believe in Him and trust Him every day. We love You, Lord. Amen.
