In John 4, Jesus talks with a woman at a well in Samaria and shows that God offers living water to everyone, including people others would rather ignore. This lesson suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

Jesus loves everyone and offers them a gift that never runs out. He talked with a woman others didn’t expect him to talk to, and he still wants to give that gift to us today.

Memory Verse

John 4:14

But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

Cup both hands together like you are holding water, then slowly lift them up high, as if the water is springing up. Say “living water” each time you lift your hands, so children connect the motion with the words.

The Story: John 4 for Kids

Jesus was tired from a long walk, so he sat down by a well outside a town called Sychar. It was about noon, and the sun was hot. A woman from Samaria came to the well to draw water, and Jesus asked her for a drink. She was surprised, because Jewish people and Samaritan people usually did not talk to each other.

Jesus told her that he could give her a special kind of water. It was living water, and once you drank it, you would never be thirsty again. The woman did not understand at first. She thought he meant ordinary water from the well, and she asked him how he would get it without a bucket.

Jesus then told her something true about her own life. He knew she had been married several times and was not married to the man she was living with now. He did not shame her. He simply showed her that he knew her and still wanted to talk with her.

The woman was amazed. She said, “Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.” She asked him where God should be worshiped. Jesus told her that people would worship God in spirit and in truth, and that God was looking for people who would worship him that way. Then Jesus told her plainly that he was the Messiah she was waiting for.

The woman was so excited that she left her water jar at the well and ran back into town. She told everyone, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did!” Many people from the town came out to meet Jesus, and they asked him to stay with them. He stayed for two days, and many more people came to believe in him.

Read It Together

John 4:9

The Samaritan woman therefore said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

Point out that the woman was surprised Jesus would talk to her, because of the way people were treated back then. Ask children how it feels when someone is left out, and remind them that Jesus welcomed this woman.

John 4:13-14

13 Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

Show how Jesus explains that ordinary water only satisfies for a little while, but the water he gives lasts forever. Use a cup of water to demonstrate: drink it, then notice you will get thirsty again, but Jesus’s gift never runs out.

John 4:39-42

39 From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman, who testified, “He told me everything that I did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of your speaking; for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”

Point out how the woman told others about Jesus, and then many people came to believe for themselves. Explain that we can share what we know about Jesus with our friends and family too.

Talk About It

  • Why do you think the woman was surprised that Jesus talked to her?
  • What did Jesus mean when he talked about water that would never make us thirsty again?
  • How did Jesus show the woman that he knew her and still cared about her?
  • Who did the woman tell about Jesus, and what happened next?
  • Who is someone you could invite to learn about Jesus this week?

Activity Ideas

Living Water Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a cup of water. Ask each child to draw a well with a bucket, then add blue wavy lines coming up out of the well to show living water springing up. Talk together about how Jesus gives a gift that never runs out, and let children add a sun or a smile to show how happy the woman was.

Well Water Relay

You will need two empty cups, a bowl of water, and a spoon for each team. Set the bowl at one end of the room and the empty cups at the other. Children take turns carrying a spoonful of water across the room to fill their team’s cup, and they must walk carefully. Explain that the woman had to walk to the well every day, and that Jesus offers a gift that is always close by.

Take-Home Water Bottle Reminder

You will need a clean plastic water bottle, a marker, and a sticky note for each child. Have children write “Living Water” on the sticky note and stick it to their bottle. Encourage them to drink water each day and say a quick thank you to Jesus when they do. This reminds them that Jesus gives a gift that never runs out.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that Jesus broke social and religious barriers to reach a Samaritan woman with the offer of eternal life. He spoke openly with her, revealed who he was, and then sent her to share the good news with her town. The passage also teaches that true worship is found in relationship with God, not in one particular place.

Be careful not to make the story about the woman’s past mistakes. Children may fixate on the detail about her husbands, so focus on the fact that Jesus knew her and still offered her living water.

A Prayer to Close

Jesus, thank you that you talk with everyone, even when others might leave them out. Help us to share the living water you give with our friends and family. Thank you that your gift never runs out. Amen.
