This John 4 Sunday school lesson teaches children that Jesus offers living water to everyone, including people others might leave out. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, with time for a story, a verse, a few questions and one simple activity.
Big Idea
Jesus loves everyone and offers them a gift that lasts forever. He spoke kindly to a woman whom many people would have ignored, and He wants us to share His love with everyone we meet.
Memory Verse
John 4:10
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
(WEB)
Cup your hands together like you are holding water, then slowly open them as you say “living water.” Do this each time you say the verse, and children will remember both the words and the picture of Jesus giving a gift.
The Story: John 4 for Kids
Jesus was tired from a long walk, so He sat down by a well in a town called Sychar in Samaria. It was about noon, and the sun was hot. A woman from that town came to the well with an empty jar to get water. Jesus asked her for a drink.
The woman was surprised. Jews and Samaritans did not usually talk to each other, and a man talking to a woman he did not know was unusual too. But Jesus was kind to her. He told her that He could give her living water, a gift that would never leave her thirsty. She said, “Sir, give me this water!”
Jesus knew everything about her, even the hard parts of her life. He did not turn away. He showed her that He was a prophet sent from God. She ran back into town and told the people, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did!” Many of them came to meet Jesus.
The people said, “Now we believe, because we have heard Him ourselves. He is the Savior of the world!” Jesus stayed with them for two days. Many more people came to trust Him. The woman who first met Jesus at the well was the first to tell others about Him.
Read It Together
John 4:13-14
13 Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

Point out that water quenches thirst only for a while, but Jesus gives a gift that never runs out. Ask children what they are thirsty for in their own lives, and help them see that Jesus is the one who satisfies.
John 4:23-24
23 But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshipers. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Explain that God is looking for people who love Him from the heart, not just in one special place. Show children that they can talk to God anywhere, at home, at school or in the car.
John 4:39
From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman, who testified, “He told me everything that I did.”
(WEB)
Point out that the woman told others about Jesus right away, even though she was new to following Him. Encourage children that they can share what they know about Jesus with friends and family, starting today.
Talk About It
- Why do you think the woman was surprised that Jesus talked to her?
- What did Jesus mean when He talked about living water that never runs out?
- How did Jesus show the woman that He cared about her, even with the hard parts of her life?
- Who did the woman tell about Jesus, and what did she say to them?
- Who is one person you could tell about Jesus this week?
Activity Ideas
Living Water Drawing
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a glass of water. Have children draw a well, a jar and a smiling face for the woman. Then let them draw a bubbling stream coming from Jesus’s hand to show living water. Talk about how Jesus gives us a gift that keeps going.
Water Carry Relay
You will need two cups, a spoon and a bowl of water placed at one end of the room. Children carry water from the bowl to an empty cup at the other end using only a spoon, racing against the clock. After each round, talk about how the woman had to come back to the well again and again, while Jesus offers water that never runs out.
Take-Home Water Bottle Reminder
You will need a small clear bottle, a label and a marker. Have children write “Living Water: Jesus Loves Me” on the label and stick it on the bottle. Ask them to take it home and tell one person what the label means before the end of the day.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that Jesus broke social barriers to reach a Samaritan woman whom many would have avoided. It also shows that worship is not limited to one location but is a matter of the heart. The woman’s immediate witness to her town reminds us that encountering Jesus naturally leads to telling others.
Avoid suggesting that children should know every detail of the woman’s past or that her life was simply sinful. Keep the focus on Jesus’s kindness and the gift of living water, and let the story’s more complex details rest with the adults who teach it.
A Prayer to Close
Dear Jesus, thank You for giving us living water that never runs out. Thank You that You talked with the woman at the well and that You love everyone, even people others forget. Help us share Your love with our friends and family this week. Amen.
