This lesson teaches children that Jesus is God’s dear Son and that we should listen to him and trust him even when we do not understand everything. It is best for children about 5 to 11 years old and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
Jesus is God’s own Son, so we should listen to him and trust him, even when we feel scared or do not understand. He is always strong enough to help us.
Memory Verse
Matthew 17:5
While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.”

Ask the children to cup their hands behind their ears when they say “Listen,” then hold both arms out wide when they say “Son.” Practice it together three times so the words and motions stick.
The Story: Matthew 17 for Kids
One day Jesus took three of his friends, Peter, James, and John, up a high mountain. They went up just the four of them, and it was quiet and far away from the crowds. Jesus had a special day planned for them, and they had no idea what was about to happen.
Suddenly, Jesus’s face began to shine as bright as the sun, and his clothes turned as white as light. Then two men they knew from long ago appeared beside him. They were Moses and Elijah, and they were talking with Jesus. Peter was so amazed that he said, “Lord, it is good that we are here!” He wanted to build three tents so they could stay on the mountain.
While Peter was still talking, a bright cloud covered them all. A voice came from the cloud, and it said that Jesus is God’s dear Son and that the disciples should listen to him. The three friends were so scared that they fell down on their faces. Jesus came over, touched them gently, and said, “Get up, and do not be afraid.” When they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone, and only Jesus was there.
As they walked back down the mountain, Jesus told them not to tell anyone what they had seen until later. Soon after that, a man came to Jesus with his son, who often fell into fire or water and was very sick. The man said the disciples had tried to help but could not. Jesus told the father to bring the boy to him, and Jesus made the boy well right away.
The disciples later asked Jesus why they could not help the boy. Jesus said it was because they did not have enough faith. He told them that even faith as small as a mustard seed can do great things, and that nothing is impossible with God. Jesus also told them that some things come through prayer and fasting.
Read It Together
Matthew 17:5-6
5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were very afraid.

Point out that God himself said, “Listen to him.” Ask the children what it feels like when they are scared, and remind them that Jesus is near and that God wants us to listen to Jesus.
Matthew 17:7
Jesus came and touched them and said, “Get up, and don’t be afraid.”

Show how Jesus did not leave the disciples afraid. He came close, touched them, and spoke kind words. Explain that Jesus does the same for us when we feel frightened.
Matthew 17:20
He said to them, “Because of your unbelief. For most certainly I tell you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

Use a real mustard seed or a picture of one to show how small it is. Explain that even a little faith matters because it trusts a very big God who can do amazing things.
Talk About It
- What did Peter want to do when he saw Jesus shining on the mountain, and why do you think he wanted that?
- What did the voice from the cloud tell the disciples to do, and how can you listen to Jesus this week?
- How did Jesus help the three friends when they were scared, and how has Jesus helped you when you felt afraid?
- What did the father ask Jesus to do for his son, and what might you ask Jesus to help you with today?
- What is one small thing you can do to trust God, even if it feels as tiny as a mustard seed?
Activity Ideas
Mountain Drawing
Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons or markers, and a cotton ball. Have them draw a tall mountain with Jesus at the top and glue cotton balls on for the bright cloud. Let them color Jesus’s face and clothes bright and white, then talk about what they drew.
Listen and Move Game
Play a simple “Simon Says” game where the leader calls out instructions starting with “Jesus says.” Children must follow only the commands that begin with “Jesus says,” which teaches them to listen carefully. Remind them that listening to Jesus is important.
Mustard Seed Take-Home
Give each child a small cup, some soil, and a few mustard seeds or bean seeds. Have them plant the seeds and water them at home, and each day they can check how the plant is growing. Explain that faith can start small and grow as we trust Jesus more.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this passage shows that Jesus is more than a teacher; he is God’s own Son, the one who shines with God’s glory and whom we should hear and obey. It also shows that Jesus speaks gently to frightened followers, and that real faith, even small faith, is connected to prayer and trust in God’s power.
Avoid overstating to children that faith alone will make any problem disappear, as if faith were a magic key. Focus instead on the truth that God is powerful and faithful, and that we can trust him even when we do not understand everything.
A Prayer to Close
Dear Jesus, we thank you that you are God’s Son and that we can listen to you. Help us to trust you when we feel scared, and help our faith grow, even if it starts out small. Be with us this week and help us to hear your voice. Amen.
