In this lesson, children learn that God counted every family of Israel in the wilderness and knew each one by name. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
God knows every one of His people by name, and every family has an important place in His plan.
Memory Verse
Numbers 1:1
The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying…

Have children cup their hands over their ears, then slowly open their arms wide as they say the words, showing how God’s voice reaches out to everyone in the camp. Repeat it together three times, getting a little quieter each time.
The Story: Numbers 1 for Kids
Israel had walked out of Egypt, and now they were camped in the wilderness near Mount Sinai. It was the second month of the second year since they had left Egypt. God spoke to Moses in a special tent called the Tent of Meeting.
God told Moses, “Count all the families of Israel. Write down every man who is twenty years old or older and able to go to war.” God wanted His people to be organized, with each family and tribe in its proper place. Moses did not count the people by himself. God chose a leader from every tribe to stand with Moses and Aaron.
Moses and Aaron called the leaders together. Each leader said the names of the men in his family, one by one. Moses wrote down each name carefully, just as God had commanded. Every tribe was counted, from Reuben to Naphtali.
When all the numbers were added up, there were more than six hundred thousand men who were able to serve. God had seen every single one of them. He knew each family’s name and where they belonged.
The Levites were different. God told Moses not to count the tribe of Levi with the others. Instead, the Levites were given the job of caring for the Tent of Meeting. When the people moved, the Levites took the tent down and carried it. When they stopped, the Levites set it up again.
In the end, the people obeyed everything the LORD had commanded Moses. Each family pitched its tent in its own place. Everyone had a job, and everyone belonged.
Read It Together
Numbers 1:2-3
2 “Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, every male, one by one; 3 from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go out to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall count them by their divisions.

Point out that God gave Moses the job of counting the people, and that the counting was done family by family. Ask children to notice that God cared about each family group, not just the whole nation.
Numbers 1:19
As the LORD commanded Moses, so he counted them in the wilderness of Sinai.

Show children that Moses did exactly what God told him to do. Explain that obeying God’s instructions, even the small details, is part of trusting Him.
Numbers 1:50-51
50 But appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle, and all its furnishings; and they shall take care of it, and shall encamp around it. 51 When the tabernacle is to move, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall set it up. The stranger who comes near shall be put to death.

Point out that the Levites had a special job of caring for the Tent of Meeting. Help children see that God gives different people different jobs, and each job matters to Him.
Talk About It
- Why do you think God wanted every family counted and written down?
- How does it make you feel to know that God knows your name?
- What did the Levites do to help the people, and why was their job important?
- What is one thing you can do this week to help your family, the way the Levites helped the camp?
- How did the people show that they trusted God when they followed His instructions?
Activity Ideas
Family Tent Drawing
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and tape. Ask each child to draw a simple tent and write or draw the names of the people in their family inside it. Tape the drawings to a wall to make a “camp” that shows how every family belongs together.
Tribe Line-Up Game
Divide the children into groups and give each group a name, like a tribe. Have the groups line up while the teacher calls out names, and each child steps forward when their name is called. Explain that God knew each person’s place, just as Moses called each name in order.
Take-Home Name Card
Give each child an index card and a pencil. Ask them to write their full name on the card and decorate it. They can place it on the family dinner table or by their bed as a reminder that God knows their name and cares for them every day.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God is a God of order and care. The census was not about pride or power but about belonging, since every person was known and numbered by name. The Levites’ role also shows that God values faithful service in every position.
When teaching children, avoid overstating the numbers or treating the counting as a math lesson. Keep the focus on God knowing each person personally, and do not suggest that counting people earns God’s favor or that anyone is more important because of their tribe.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for knowing each of us by name. Help us remember that we belong to You and to our families. Show us how we can help the people around us, just as the Levites helped their camp. Amen.
