This lesson teaches children that God cares about fairness and keeps His promises to families, even when the rules seem complicated. It is best for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God is fair, and He keeps His promises to every family. When we follow His ways, He takes good care of the people we love.
Memory Verse
Numbers 36:13
These are the commandments and the ordinances which the LORD commanded by Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

Ask the children to stand up and hold their hands out in front of them, palms up, like they are receiving a gift. Then have them bring their hands to their hearts while they say the verse together. Repeat it three times, getting a little quieter each time, so the words stick.
The Story: Numbers 36 for Kids
God’s people, the Israelites, were getting ready to move into the land God had promised them. Each family was going to receive its own piece of land, shared out by lot. But there was a problem. A man named Zelophehad had died, and he had no sons, only five daughters named Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah.
Earlier, God had made a rule that land passed down through sons. So the daughters worried they would get no land at all. They went to Moses, the leader, and asked him for help. Moses took their question to God, and God said, “The daughters of Zelophehad speak what is right.”
God gave the girls their own land, so their father’s family name would not be lost. Then the leaders from the family of Gilead came to Moses with a new worry. What if these girls married men from a different tribe? Then their land might move to that other tribe, and their own family would lose it.
Moses listened and then gave a clear answer. He told the daughters, “You may marry whomever you choose, but you must marry within your father’s tribe.” So the land stayed where it belonged. The girls did exactly as God asked, and each of them married a cousin from their father’s family. Their land remained with their family, just as God wanted.
Read It Together
Numbers 36:1-2
1 The heads of the fathers’ households of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spoke before Moses, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers’ households of the children of Israel. 2 They said, “The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel. My lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

Point out that the leaders came to Moses with a question, not an argument. Ask the children how they can bring their questions to God and to the adults who love them, even when they feel worried.
Numbers 36:6-7
6 This is the thing which the LORD does command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them be married to whom they think best; only they shall marry into the family of the tribe of their father. 7 So shall no inheritance of the children of Israel move from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall all keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

Show the children that God’s rule was made to protect families and the gifts He gave them. Explain that a good rule keeps people safe and keeps promises, so everyone can have what belongs to them.
Numbers 36:10-11
10 The daughters of Zelophehad did as the LORD commanded Moses: 11 for Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to their father’s brothers’ sons.

Point out that the daughters obeyed God even though it was not easy for them. Ask the children what it looks like to obey God when we would rather do something else.
Talk About It
- What did the daughters of Zelophehad do when they felt worried about their land?
- How do you think Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah felt when Moses said yes?
- Why did God want the land to stay in each family’s tribe?
- What is one promise that God has made to you, and how can you remember it?
- When is it hard to do what is right, and who can help you when it is hard?
Activity Ideas
Draw Your Family Land
Give each child a sheet of paper, crayons, and a pencil. Ask them to draw a piece of land and put the people they love on it, like a picture of home. Let them tell the class one thing that makes their family’s place special. Talk about how God gives each family a place to belong.
Walk the Promise Line
Use masking tape to make a long line on the floor, and place a few paper stones along it. Have children walk the line carefully, balancing like they are keeping a promise on a narrow path. Each time they reach a stone, have them say one way God keeps His promises. This game gets everyone moving and talking together.
Promise Keeper Card
Give each child an index card and a marker. Have them write or draw one promise they will keep this week, such as helping at home or sharing a toy. Let them take the card home and place it on the fridge or by their bed. Encourage them to show it to a family member and ask that person to help them remember.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God cares about justice and the practical details of family life. He listened to the daughters, gave them a voice, and then kept the inheritance intact so every family kept its place. It also shows that God’s commands fit together, so that one act of justice does not undo another.
Avoid overstating to children that doing right always brings immediate reward or that God will give them exactly what they ask for. Instead, help them see that God is faithful and fair, and that He wants them to trust Him when things are uncertain.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, thank You for being fair and keeping Your promises to us. Help us bring our questions to You and to the people who love us. Show us how to do what is right, even when it is hard, and help us trust that You take care of our families. Amen.
