This lesson teaches children that God gives every person a special job to do for Him, and He makes them clean and ready to serve. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the reading, and the activity.

Big Idea

God keeps His light burning, and He makes His helpers clean so they can serve Him well. Every helper has a job, and God helps us do it.

Memory Verse

Numbers 8:2

“Speak to Aaron, and tell him, ‘When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lamp stand.’”

(WEB)

Have the children hold both hands up high, like a lamp, and wiggle their fingers like flames. Then bring the hands down slowly to their hearts. Say the verse together with the motions three times, and let the children get louder each time.

The Story: Numbers 8 for Kids

A long time ago, the people of Israel were traveling through the desert. God gave them a special tent called the Tent of Meeting, where they could worship Him. Inside the tent stood a tall golden lamp stand with seven lamps on it. God told Moses to talk to Aaron, the priest, about keeping those lamps lit.

Aaron did just what God asked. He lit the seven lamps so they shone brightly in front of the lamp stand. He made the lamp stand exactly the way God had shown Moses, with every flower and branch in the right place. God was pleased with Aaron, because Aaron obeyed Him carefully.

Next, God spoke to Moses about the Levites. The Levites were men from the tribe of Levi who would help take care of the tent and its work. God said, “Take the Levites and make them clean.” So Moses sprinkled special water on them, and they washed their clothes and shaved their bodies. Then they brought offerings to God, as He had told them.

God explained that the Levites would belong to Him in a special way. Long ago, God had kept the firstborn children of Israel safe on the night the people left Egypt. Now He gave the Levites to serve in place of those firstborn sons. The Levites promised to work in the tent, and they started their job after they were made clean.

The Levites were ready for their work now. They started serving at the age of twenty-five, and they helped in the tent for many years. When they grew older, at fifty, they could stop the heavy work, but they could still help their brothers. Everyone had a place and a job, and everyone served God together.

Read It Together

Numbers 8:3

Aaron did so. He lit its lamps to light the area in front of the lamp stand, as the LORD commanded Moses.

(WEB)

Point out that Aaron did exactly what God asked. Ask the children how they can follow God’s instructions in small things at home, like listening the first time a parent asks for help. Remind them that obeying God is a way of serving Him.

Numbers 8:7

You shall do this to them, to cleanse them: sprinkle the water of cleansing on them, let them shave their whole bodies with a razor, and let them wash their clothes, and cleanse themselves.

(WEB)

Explain that God made the Levites clean before they served Him. Show children that washing and cleaning in the Bible often pictures being ready to come near to God. Talk about how we can ask God to make our hearts clean when we sin.

Numbers 8:19

I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the Tent of Meeting, and to make atonement for the children of Israel; that there be no plague among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel come near to the sanctuary.”

(WEB)

Point out that God gave the Levites as a gift to help the people. Tell children that God gives us people to love and help, and that helping others is one way we serve God with the gifts He has given us.

Talk About It

  • What did Aaron do to keep the lamps shining in the tent, and why do you think God wanted the lamps to stay lit?
  • How did the Levites get ready to serve God in the tent?
  • What is one job at home or at church that you could do to help someone this week?
  • Why do you think God wanted everyone to follow His instructions exactly?
  • How can you let your light shine for Jesus at school or with your friends?

Activity Ideas

Golden Lamp Craft

Give each child a paper cup, a piece of yellow or orange tissue paper, and some glue. Have them crumple the tissue paper into small flame shapes and glue them inside the top of the cup. Use a tea light or draw a flame on the cup to show that God’s light keeps shining. Talk about how Aaron kept the lamps lit for God.

Lamp Stand Freeze Game

Ask the children to stand in a line and act like the lamp stand, with arms out like branches. Call out “Serve!” and have them march in place. Then call out “Clean!” and have them pretend to wash their hands and clothes. Mix up the commands and see who can respond fastest and most carefully, just like the Levites followed God’s instructions.

Helper Promise Card

Give each child an index card and a marker. Ask them to write or draw one way they will help at home this week. Let them decorate the card with a small lamp or a heart. Encourage them to keep the card on their bedside table or in their backpack as a reminder that God gives everyone a job to do.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that God is orderly and that He cares about how we come near to Him. The lamps, the cleansing, and the careful assignment of the Levites all point to a God who is holy and who provides a way for His people to serve Him. Christians today see these details as preparing the way for the greater light and cleansing found in Jesus.

When teaching children, avoid overstating the connection between the Levites and modern church roles. The chapter describes a specific arrangement for ancient Israel, and children should understand that God’s care for them is the main point, rather than thinking every detail applies to them directly.

A Prayer to Close

Lord, thank You for keeping Your light burning and for giving each of us a special job to do. Help us to listen carefully and obey You, even in small things. Make our hearts clean and ready to serve You every day. Help us shine for You wherever we go. Amen.
