This lesson teaches children that God keeps us safe and is good to us, so we can always run to Him. It works well for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short activity.

Big Idea

God is our safe place and our best friend, and everything good in our life comes from Him. When we trust Him, we can be glad even on hard days.

Memory Verse

Psalm 16:1

Preserve me, God, for in you do I take refuge.

(WEB)

Cup both hands in front of your chest, like you are holding something precious. Say the verse slowly, then lift your hands up and open them wide each time you say the word “refuge,” as if you are welcoming someone in.

The Story: Psalm 16 for Kids

Long ago, a king named David wrote a song to God. He had many troubles, and he knew he could not keep himself safe. So he prayed, “Keep me safe, God, because I run to You.” David trusted God the way a little child runs to a parent after a scary noise.

David knew that God had given him everything good. His home, his friends, and his life were gifts from God. He said to the Lord, “You are my Lord. Apart from You, I have no good thing.” David was thankful, and he did not want to follow any false gods that could not help him at all.

David thought about God’s people, the ones who loved and honored Him. He said they were the best friends he could have. He chose to stay close to them and to God, instead of chasing things that could never make him happy.

David remembered that God picked out a special place for him, like a beautiful piece of land with a good view. He said, “The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places.” David felt happy, because he knew God was looking after him every single day.

Even at night, David’s heart kept talking to God. He thanked God for teaching him what was right. He said that God was always beside him, so he would not be shaken. David’s heart was full of joy, and he trusted God to show him the best path forward.

Read It Together

Psalm 16:5-6

5 The LORD assigned my portion and my cup. You made my lot secure. 6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places. Yes, I have a good inheritance.

(WEB)

Point out how David says God is his portion and his cup, which means God is what fills his life. Ask the children what gifts they have received from God and invite them to name one out loud.

Psalm 16:8

I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

(WEB)

Show the children that David keeps God in front of him all the time, like a picture on the wall. Ask them to think of one way they can remember God during their day.

Psalm 16:11

You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

(WEB)

Point out the words “path of life” and “fullness of joy,” and explain that God shows us where to go and fills us with happiness. Let the children point up with a finger to show that God leads us from above.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing God has given you that makes you happy?
  • When you feel scared, what can you do to run to God like David did?
  • How can you show your family or friends that you trust God?
  • Why do you think David wanted to stay close to God instead of chasing other things?
  • What do you think it means that God shows us the path to follow?

Activity Ideas

Safe Place Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a picture of a place where they feel safe, then draw a small figure of God or a heart near the center to show God is with them. Let them explain their drawing to a partner before taking it home.

Follow the Path Game

Use masking tape or string to make a winding path across the floor. Have one child lead while the others follow with their eyes closed, trusting the leader’s voice. Afterward, talk about how God is a leader we can trust even when we cannot see the whole way ahead.

Thankful Cup Take-Home

You will need a paper cup and some stickers or markers. Ask each child to write or draw three gifts God has given them on the cup, then take it home as a reminder. Encourage them to fill the cup with real things they are thankful for each week.

Teacher Notes

Psalm 16 shows that real security comes from trusting God as our Lord and our source of every good thing. For adults, it is a reminder that our hearts can wander toward things that promise satisfaction but cannot deliver it. David’s confidence rests on God’s faithfulness, not on his own strength or circumstances.

When teaching children, avoid promising that trusting God will keep them from every hardship or danger. The psalm speaks of God’s presence and joy in the midst of life, not a guarantee that nothing hard will ever happen. Keep the focus on God’s nearness and goodness.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You that we can run to You and be safe. Help us remember that every good thing comes from You. Show us the path to follow each day, and fill us with joy as we stay close to You. Amen.
