This lesson teaches children that God hears us and helps us, even when people are unkind to us. Children ages 5 to 11 can learn it in 20 to 30 minutes, using a short story, a memory motion, and a simple activity.
Big Idea
When people are mean or scary, we can pray to God, and He will help us. We can trust Him even when we feel afraid.
Memory Verse
Psalm 54:4
Behold, God is my helper. The Lord is the one who sustains my soul.
(WEB)
Teach the children to cup their hands over their heart while they say the verse. Then have them lift both hands up high, like someone reaching up to be lifted, on the words “God is my helper.” Repeat it together three times, getting a little quieter each time.
The Story: Psalm 54 for Kids
A man named David was in trouble. Some strangers had risen up against him, and they were cruel. They wanted to hurt him, and they did not care about God. David felt very scared, and he did not know what to do.
So David went to God in prayer. He said, “Save me, God, by your name. Please hear my prayer.” He asked God to be strong on his behalf, because he could not fight these people alone. David knew God was bigger than any problem he faced.
David kept his trust in God. He said, “Behold, God is my helper. The Lord is the one who holds my soul up.” David believed God would take care of him, even when his enemies were close. He did not have to be brave on his own.
David made a promise to God. He said he would give thanks to God’s name, because God is good. He would bring a gift of worship to thank God for rescuing him. Thankfulness was his way of showing his trust.
At the end of the story, David said that God had delivered him out of all trouble. He had seen God win the battle against his enemies. David was thankful, and he remembered that God had helped him.
Read It Together
Psalm 54:1-2
1 Save me, God, by your name. Vindicate me in your might. 2 Hear my prayer, God. Listen to the words of my mouth.
(WEB)
Point out that David asked God to save him and to hear his words. Ask the children what they might say to God when they feel scared. Remind them that God always listens to us.
Psalm 54:6-7
6 With a free will offering, I will sacrifice to you. I will give thanks to your name, the LORD, for it is good. 7 For he has delivered me out of all trouble. My eye has seen triumph over my enemies.
(WEB)
Point out that David said “thank you” to God even before the story ended. Explain that thankfulness is a good way to respond when God helps us. Invite the children to name one thing they can thank God for today.
Talk About It
- What did David do when he felt scared?
- Why do you think David asked God to hear his prayer?
- What is one thing that makes you feel safe when you are afraid?
- How can you be thankful to God even on a hard day?
- Who can you pray to when someone is being unkind to you?
Activity Ideas
Helper Hands Craft
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and scissors. Have each child trace one of their hands on paper and cut it out. On each finger, have them write or draw one way God helps them, such as “God hears me” or “God keeps me safe.” Hang the hands in the classroom or at home as a reminder.
Freeze Help Game
You will need an open space and a timer or a simple song. Have the children walk around while music plays. When the music stops, they freeze and call out one way God helps us. Each child who speaks gets a turn to lead the next movement, such as hopping or stretching tall.
Thank You Card Take-Home
You will need a sheet of cardstock per child, crayons, and a pencil. Ask each child to fold the paper in half and draw a picture of something they are thankful for. Inside, they write “Thank you, God, for being my helper.” Encourage them to share the card with someone at home that week.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Psalm 54 shows that trusting God does not mean avoiding danger or pretending we are not afraid. David prayed honestly about his enemies and then chose to trust God as his helper and to give thanks. It is a model for bringing real fears to God and resting in His faithfulness.
Avoid promising children that God will always remove every bad person or situation from their lives right away. Instead, focus on the truth that God hears them and stays with them. Be honest that hard things happen, and that God’s help is always good, even when we do not see the answer we expected.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank you for hearing us when we pray. When we feel scared or when people are unkind, help us remember that you are our helper. Keep us safe and make us thankful. We love you. Amen.
