This lesson teaches children that they can talk to God and look for Him at any time, because He is their helper and their friend. It works well for children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God is our helper, and we can seek Him in the morning, at night, and everywhere in between. Like a thirsty person longs for water, our hearts can long for God.

Memory Verse

Psalm 63:1

God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where there is no water.

(WEB)

Have children cup their hands together like a cup of water, then lift them up toward the ceiling as they say the verse slowly together. Repeat it three times, each time a little quieter, until the whole class can say it from memory.

The Story: Psalm 63 for Kids

King David wrote this song a long time ago while he was far away from home. He was in a dry and weary desert where there was no water to drink. Everything around him was hot, dusty, and tired.

David felt thirsty, but not only in his body. His heart was thirsty too, and he wanted to be close to God. He said, “God, you are my God, and I will look for you early in the morning.” David had seen God’s power and glory when he went to the tent where people worshiped Him.

David knew that God’s love was better than anything in the world. So he decided he would praise God with his whole life. He lifted his hands up toward heaven and said, “I will bless you while I live.”

Even at night, when David lay down in his bed, he thought about God. He remembered how God had helped him many times. David felt safe, like a little bird tucked under its mother’s wings. He said, “Your right hand holds me up.”

David trusted that God would take care of him and of everyone who loved Him. Those who tried to hurt David and his people would not win. God would make the lies stop, and the king would have a reason to be glad.

Read It Together

Psalm 63:3

Because your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise you.

(WEB)

Point out that David says God’s love is better than life itself. Ask the children what they like most about their lives, then remind them that God’s love is even better than those things.

Psalm 63:6

When I remember you on my bed, and think about you in the night watches.

(WEB)

Show the children that David thought about God in the night, not just during the day. Explain that they can talk to God before they go to sleep, and God hears them then too.

Psalm 63:8

My soul stays close to you. Your right hand holds me up.

(WEB)

Point out the picture of God holding David up. Explain that God holds us up when we feel weak or scared, and that we can stay close to Him like a child holding a parent’s hand.

Talk About It

  • What do you think David felt when he was in the dry, hot desert with no water?
  • How can you feel thirsty for God, the way you feel thirsty for water after playing outside?
  • What is one thing God has helped you with this week?
  • When is a good time for you to talk to God during your day?
  • How do you think God holds you up when you feel scared or sad?

Activity Ideas

Paper Cup Drawing

You will need paper cups, crayons, and paper. Have each child draw a picture of something they want to tell God about on a piece of paper, then tape it inside a cup. Explain that the cup is a reminder that our hearts can be filled up with God, just like water fills a cup.

Thirsty Desert Game

Set up a “desert” by clearing a space in the room. Let the children walk slowly like they are tired and thirsty in the sun, then run to a “water station” in the corner where you have placed a small bowl of water on a table. Each time they reach the water, have them say “God, I am thirsty for you.” Keep the game short and cheerful.

Wings of Safety Take-Home

Give each child a sheet of paper and have them trace both of their hands to make a simple bird shape. Cut out the shape and let them write or draw one way God protects them. Encourage them to tape the bird to their bedroom wall so they can remember God’s care at night.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Psalm 63 shows a deep longing for God that does not depend on comfortable circumstances. David writes from a place of danger and dryness, yet he still trusts God, praises Him, and clings to Him. It invites believers to seek God in every season and to find satisfaction in Him rather than in things.

Avoid overstating to children that God will always remove every hard thing from their lives. The lesson is that God is near and helps us through difficulty, not that difficulty will never come. Be honest that David also faced enemies and that God’s help is a source of peace even when problems remain.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, we are thankful that you are our God and that we can look for you every day. Help us to want you more than anything else, like a thirsty person wants water. Thank you for holding us up and keeping us safe. Amen.
