This lesson teaches children that God is a safe place to go when they feel scared, and they can repeat it as “God keeps me safe under his wings.” It suits children aged 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God is our safe place. When we stay close to him and trust him, we do not need to be afraid, because he takes care of us every day.

Memory Verse

Psalm 91:4

He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart.

(WEB)

Put your arms out wide, then fold them across your chest like wings. Hug yourself gently as you say the verse together. Each time you do the motion, picture God covering you with his feathers.

The Story: Psalm 91 for Kids

Long ago, a songwriter wrote a poem about a place where people feel safe. He called it the secret place of the Most High. He said that anyone who lives close to God rests in his shadow, like a bird tucked under its mother’s wings on a stormy night.

The writer had seen many scary things. Some nights were dark and frightening, and some days brought danger shooting past like arrows. But he chose to trust God. He said, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” A refuge is a place you run to when you need protection.

The poem tells us that God rescues people from traps and sickness. It says that even if many people fall around you, God can keep you safe. Think of a little bird that stays under its mother’s wings and is kept warm and secure while the storm rages outside.

God also sends his angels to watch over those who love him. The poem says they carry his people in their hands so they do not stumble over a stone on the path. The writer is sure that God hears his children when they call, and he says, “I will be with him in trouble.”

At the end, God speaks in the poem and makes a promise. He says he will deliver the one who loves him, honor him, and show him his salvation. God keeps every promise he makes to his children.

Read It Together

Psalm 91:1-2

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”

(WEB)

Point out the words “secret place” and “refuge.” Ask children where they feel safest at home or at school, then explain that God is a safe place even bigger than any house.

Psalm 91:11-12

11 For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways. 12 They will bear you up in their hands, so that you won’t dash your foot against a stone.

(WEB)

Show how the angels guard God’s people on every path. Ask children to walk slowly around the room while you say that God watches over them on every step they take.

Psalm 91:14-15

14 “Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him. I will set him on high, because he has known my name. 15 He will call on me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him, and honor him.

(WEB)

Point out the words “I will answer him” and “I will be with him in trouble.” Remind children that they can talk to God anytime they are scared, and he will hear them.

Talk About It

  • What is something that makes you feel scared, and what does God’s shelter mean to you when you feel that way?
  • How is God like a mother bird covering her babies with her wings?
  • Where is a place you feel safe, and how is God’s care like that place?
  • What can you do when you feel afraid during the day or at night?
  • Why do you think God wants to be close to the people who love him?

Activity Ideas

Paper Bird Shelter Craft

You will need paper, crayons, glue, and cotton balls. Have each child trace a hand on paper, then cut out the shape to make wings. Glue the wings onto a folded paper bird and add cotton balls as soft feathers. Talk about how God covers us like a bird covers its nest.

Shadow Shelter Game

Clear some space in the room and have children play a game of tag where “home” is a safe spot marked with a chair or blanket. When someone is caught, they run back to the safe spot. Explain that God is like that safe place, and that we can run to him whenever we are scared.

Take-Home Bird Reminder

Give each child a small paper bird and a strip of tape. Ask them to tape it to their bedroom door or bedside lamp as a reminder to say the memory verse before sleep. Encourage them to tell a family member what the bird means.

Teacher Notes

Psalm 91 teaches adults that God’s protection is a deep, steady relationship rather than a promise that nothing bad will ever happen. The psalm pictures believers resting in God’s presence, trusting his faithfulness through both quiet days and frightening times. Adults can take comfort in knowing that God’s care surrounds them even when they cannot see how.

Avoid telling children that if they pray and trust God, nothing bad will ever happen to them. Children may face sickness, loss, or fear, and they need to hear that God stays with them through hard times. Focus on God’s presence and faithfulness rather than a guarantee of ease.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you that you are our safe place and our shelter. When we feel scared, help us run to you and trust that you are close. Keep us under your wings every day and every night. Amen.
