This lesson teaches children that Jesus knows everything we do, and he wants us to keep loving him and stay faithful even when it is hard. It is designed for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

Jesus knows what we do, he loves us, and he helps us stay faithful to him even when it is hard. We can keep loving Jesus with our whole heart every day.

Memory Verse

Revelation 2:10

Don’t be afraid of the things which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested; and you will have oppression for ten days. Be faithful to death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Hold both hands out in front of you, palms up, like you are holding something precious. Then slowly raise them above your head as if you are receiving a shining crown. Do this motion each time you say the verse together.

The Story: Revelation 2 for Kids

Long ago, the apostle John was given a letter to share with seven churches in cities across the land. Each church got its own message from Jesus. Jesus described himself as the one who holds the stars in his hand and walks among the golden lampstands. He wanted these friends to know he was close to them.

To the church in Ephesus, Jesus said, “I know how hard you have worked for me.” The people there had worked hard, and they did not let bad people fool them. But Jesus also noticed something sad. They had stopped loving him the way they did at first. He told them to remember how much they once loved him and to turn back to him.

The church in Smyrna was going through a hard time. Some of the people were poor, and some would soon be put in prison. Jesus told them not to be afraid. He said, “Be faithful even until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” He promised to stay with them through the trouble.

The church in Pergamum lived in a place where many people did not know Jesus. Some of the friends there had let false teaching lead them away from him. Jesus told them to stop and turn back to him. He promised to give his friends a special gift of hidden manna and a new name that only they would know.

The church in Thyatira worked hard to serve and love others, and Jesus saw it all. But some people there were following a false prophetess who led God’s people away from the truth. Jesus told them he was giving her time to change her heart. He encouraged the faithful ones to hold on to what they had until he came back.

Jesus ended each message the same way. He said, “Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says.” Jesus wanted every child and grown-up to listen and to stay close to him.

Read It Together

Revelation 2:2-3

2 “I know your works, and your toil and perseverance, and that you can’t tolerate evil men, and have tested those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and found them false. 3 You have perseverance and have endured for my name’s sake, and have not grown weary.

(WEB)

Point out that Jesus noticed the Ephesian church’s hard work and patience. Ask the children what hard things they have done for Jesus this week, and remind them that Jesus sees their effort too.

Revelation 2:4-5

4 But I have this against you, that you left your first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the first works; or else I am coming to you swiftly, and will move your lamp stand out of its place, unless you repent.

(WEB)

Explain that the church had lost some of the love it had at first. Show that Jesus invites us to come back to him, which is what the word repent means, and that he always welcomes us back.

Revelation 2:26-27

26 He who overcomes, and he who keeps my works to the end, to him I will give authority over the nations. 27 He will rule them with a rod of iron, shattering them like clay pots; as I also have received of my Father…

(WEB)

Tell the children that Jesus promises his faithful friends a special place of honor with him. Explain that this shows how much Jesus values those who keep following him, even when it is hard.

Talk About It

  • What is one way you can show Jesus that you love him this week?
  • How do you think the friends in Smyrna felt when Jesus told them not to be afraid?
  • What does it mean to you that Jesus knows everything you do?
  • Why do you think it is important to come back to Jesus when we forget to love him?
  • What helps you stay faithful to Jesus when things get hard?

Activity Ideas

Draw a Crown of Life

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and scissors. Have each child trace their hand on paper, cut it out, and draw a gold crown on the top of the hand shape. Let them write the words “Be faithful” in the middle. Hang the finished hands around the room to remind everyone to stay faithful.

Lampstand Freeze Game

You will need an open space and a few chairs or spots marked with tape. Call out “lampstand” and have the children freeze in a tall, still pose like a lamp. Then call out “walk among the lamps” and have them walk slowly around the room. Play a few rounds to show that Jesus is always near his people.

Faithful Friend Card

You will need index cards, stickers, and a pen. Have each child write one way they want to stay faithful to Jesus this week and decorate the card with stickers. Encourage them to take the card home and place it somewhere they will see it each morning, like on the breakfast table or by the bed.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows that Jesus knows the hearts and actions of his church, both the faithful work and the places where love has grown cold. It calls believers to steady endurance, to resist false teaching, and to return to Jesus with a renewed love. Jesus is both just and gracious, offering reward to those who remain faithful.

Avoid suggesting to children that every detail of Revelation’s symbols, such as the stones, the manna, or the morning star, has a fixed meaning they must memorize. Keep the focus on the simple truths: Jesus knows us, he loves us, and he calls us to stay close to him.

A Prayer to Close

Jesus, thank you for knowing everything about us and loving us so much. Help us to keep loving you with all our hearts, even when things are hard. Give us courage to stay faithful and to come back to you when we forget. We want to hear what your Spirit says to us. Amen.
