This lesson teaches children that Jesus knows each church well, wants them to wake up and stay faithful, and is always ready to welcome anyone who opens the door to him. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
Jesus knows everything about us, he wants us to stay awake and faithful, and he is always knocking, waiting for us to let him in.
Memory Verse
Revelation 3:20
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me.

Have the children knock three times on a table or the floor, then pretend to turn a doorknob slowly. Ask them to do this motion each time they say the verse, so the knocking and the opening become the easy way to remember Jesus’s promise.
The Story: Revelation 3 for Kids
Long ago, the apostle John was an old man living on an island called Patmos. He had a vision from Jesus, and Jesus gave him messages to write down for seven churches in cities across the land. Each message was written to one church, and each one began with Jesus saying that he knew all about their work.
The church in Sardis had a good name. People thought it was alive and strong. But Jesus looked deeper and said, “You are dead.” He told them to wake up and hold onto what was still good before it was gone. Some people in that church had kept their clothes clean and pure, and Jesus promised they would walk with him in white.
The church in Philadelphia had only a little strength, but they kept Jesus’s word and did not turn away from his name. Jesus told them that he had opened a door no one could shut. He promised to keep them safe during a hard time that was coming to the whole world, and he said he was coming soon.
The church in Laodicea was different. They thought they had everything they needed, but Jesus saw that they were poor, blind, and naked in their hearts. He said they were lukewarm, like water that is neither hot nor cold, and that was not what he wanted. He told them to come to him for what they truly needed, and he said that he loves the people he corrects.
Then Jesus said something beautiful. He told them he stands at the door and knocks. If anyone hears him and opens the door, he will come in and eat a meal with them, just like a good friend. Every message ended with the same reminder: if you have ears, listen to what the Spirit is saying.
Read It Together
Revelation 3:4-5
4 Nevertheless you have a few names in Sardis that did not defile their garments. They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who overcomes will be arrayed in white garments, and I will in no way blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Point out that some people in Sardis kept their clothes clean, and Jesus promised to walk with them. Ask the children what it looks like to keep our hearts clean even when others around us are not careful.
Revelation 3:8
“I know your works (behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut), that you have a little power, and kept my word, and didn’t deny my name.
(WEB)
Show the children that the church in Philadelphia was small and not very strong, but Jesus still said he had set an open door before them. Explain that Jesus notices faithful people even when they feel like they have little to offer.
Revelation 3:17-19
17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing;’ and don’t know that you are the wretched one, miserable, poor, blind, and naked; 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may become rich; and white garments, that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I reprove and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent.

Point out that the church in Laodicea thought they were rich but were actually in need. Explain that Jesus loves us enough to tell us the truth and to invite us back to him with gold refined by fire, which means his good gifts that make us truly rich.
Talk About It
- What is one thing you can do this week to stay awake and watch for Jesus?
- Why do you think Jesus said the church in Sardis was dead even though people thought they were alive?
- How does it feel to know Jesus notices even the small things we do for him?
- What does it mean to open the door of your heart to Jesus?
- Why is it good when someone who loves us tells us the truth, even when it is hard to hear?
Activity Ideas
Paper Door Hanger Craft
You will need construction paper, crayons, scissors, and a little tape. Have each child draw a door on paper, then cut out the door shape. Let them decorate the door with their favorite colors and write Jesus’s words, “I stand at the door and knock,” on the inside. Tape it to a bedroom or kitchen door at home as a reminder that Jesus is always near.
Wake Up and Knock Game
Gather the children in a circle and have one child be the “sleeper” who sits with eyes closed. Everyone else quietly walks around, then knocks on the floor gently. When the sleeper hears a knock, they wake up and say, “I’m awake, Jesus!” Switch roles so everyone has a turn.
Take-Home Watch Card
Give each child a small index card and a pencil. Ask them to draw a simple picture of a door and write “Jesus knocks” on the back. Encourage them to show the card to a parent each night and talk about one way they opened the door of their heart to Jesus that day. Families can keep the cards in a Bible or on the fridge.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Revelation 3 shows that Jesus speaks honestly to real churches, encouraging the faithful, correcting the complacent, and inviting everyone into closer fellowship with him. The letters reveal that outward reputation can hide inward decline, and that Jesus values steady faithfulness more than appearance.
Avoid overstating to children the details of the seven churches or the future events mentioned in this chapter. Keep the focus on Jesus knowing us, loving us, and inviting us to open our hearts to him.
A Prayer to Close
Jesus, thank you for knowing us completely and for loving us anyway. Help us stay awake and keep the good things you have given us. Thank you that you stand at the door of our hearts and knock. Help us always open the door to you. Amen.
