This morning prayer is for the hours before a family gathering, when the house is quiet and the people you love will soon be sitting around the same table. Pray it over your coffee, in the car on the way over, or while you stand in the kitchen setting out plates. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Morning Prayers for a Family Gathering
Lord, thank you for this new day and for the people you have given me to share it with. Before the doorbell rings and the first cousin arrives, I want to slow down and bring this gathering to you. Some of us carry old hurts into a room like this, and some of us are tired from the week, or worried about someone who isn’t able to come. Help me to see each person as you see them, not only as they were the last time we argued or missed each other.
Give me patience with the small things: the noise, the late arrivals, the dish that didn’t turn out right, the question about my job or my health that I don’t want to answer today. Soften my tongue before I open my mouth. Where there is tension between family members, let me be a peacemaker and not a spectator. Where someone is grieving an empty chair, let there be room for their tears at the table. Let us eat together, laugh together, and leave a little more loved than we arrived. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I’m walking into a day with people I love and some I find hard to love. Give me a gentle heart and a slow tongue. Help me listen more than I speak, and remember that everyone in this house is carrying something I may not see. Let this gathering point us back toward you and toward each other. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it in the quiet part of your morning, before the phone starts buzzing with texts about who is bringing what. A chair by a window, a cup of tea in your hands, or a walk around the block before the house fills up all work well. If your hands need something to do, fold a napkin or set one place at the table while you pray, letting each place remind you of a person you are asking God to bless.
If you are not the only one who cares about this day, invite a spouse, a sibling, or an older relative to pray it with you, or to say a line each. Shared prayer before a family gathering often softens the whole room, because it reminds everyone that they are coming to the table as members of one household under God.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before every person who walks through your door today. May he give them rest from their worries, grace for their weaknesses, and joy in being together. May he keep your family close, and may the table you share be a place where love is found and peace is made.
