This morning prayer is for the first hours of a new year, when the calendar is still blank and the day ahead feels uncertain. Pray it on the first morning of the year, or on any morning when you want to begin fresh. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for a New Year

Lord, I come to you before the day has its full weight on me. You are the same God who was faithful yesterday and who will be faithful in the months I cannot yet see. Thank you for bringing me to this new year and for the mercy that meets me again this morning. I do not know what this year will hold, but I know who holds it.

Be with me in the ordinary things I will do today. Steady my hands for the work in front of me, and give me patience with the people I will meet, especially the ones who are hard to love. Guard my tongue in conversation and my heart in moments of stress. Where I am tempted to worry about what is coming, remind me that today has enough trouble of its own, and that you have already gone ahead of me into tomorrow. Give me wisdom for the decisions I face this year and the grace to admit it when I am wrong.

Father, I bring you the people I love and the ones I carry in my thoughts. Protect those who are sick, those who are grieving, and those who are walking through something I cannot see. Let this year be one in which I grow closer to you and more faithful in small things. Make me ready to receive what you give and to release what you ask me to let go of. Teach me to live this day well, one hour at a time, and to trust you with the rest. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this is a new year and I feel the weight of what I do not know. Thank you that you are faithful, and that you have already been here before me. Give me a clear mind for today, a kind word for the people I meet, and the courage to do the next right thing. Keep me close to you as the year unfolds. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Begin the morning by thanking God that his mercies have not run out, even though a new year has started. Pray that his faithfulness would be fresh to you today, not just something you remember from last year.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Ask God to teach you to number your days, so that today is spent with intention rather than drift. Pray this as you look at your calendar and ask him to shape how you use your time.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

As you plan the coming weeks, pray that you would trust the Lord more than your own understanding. Ask him to make your paths straight, especially where the choices feel unclear.

Isaiah 43:19

Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the new year feels like a dry or uncertain stretch. Ask God to show you the new thing he is doing, even if you cannot yet see the way through.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When worry about the year ahead starts to rise, bring it to God in prayer with thanksgiving. Ask him to guard your heart and mind with his peace as you step into the day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer early, before you check your phone or open your inbox, if you can. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of something warm, and let the first few minutes belong to God. If you have a notebook, write down the names of the people you mentioned and the tasks you expect to face today, then read the prayer while looking at the list.

You might also pray it with someone else, such as a spouse, roommate, or friend who is starting the year with you. Read the lines aloud in turn, or ask them to pray over the people you carry. Either way, let the prayer become a habit you return to on hard mornings as well as hopeful ones.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this new year and walk beside you through every ordinary hour. May his peace settle over your work and your relationships, and may his faithfulness be the ground you stand on each morning. Go forward today knowing you are kept.
