This morning prayer is for the moment before the day starts, when old hurts with family members can come back into your mind before you have had your coffee. Pray it when you wake, at the kitchen table, or in the car before you walk into a house where tension is waiting. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayers for Family Forgiveness

Father, I come to you before the rest of the house is awake. Yesterday left a mark on me, and I can feel it this morning in the way I am already rehearsing what I want to say to my brother, my mother, or the spouse who sleeps beside me. Some of those words were sharp, and some of the silence was harder still. Show me where I have held onto resentment, and give me the honesty to name it before you without making excuses for myself.

Soften the places in my heart that have hardened over time. Help me to remember that the people I love are as tired and imperfect as I am, and that they are carrying their own wounds into this day. When I see a family member today, let me speak with patience instead of defensiveness. If I need to apologize, give me the courage to do it plainly and without waiting for them to go first. If I am the one who needs to receive forgiveness, help me to accept it with humility. Keep me from keeping score. Let my home be a place where grace is practiced in small ways, at breakfast, in the hallway, and over the dishes. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am already tense about the people I will see today. Forgive me for what I have held against them, and soften my heart before I open my mouth. Give me the words that heal instead of the words that wound, and help me to extend to my family the same mercy you have shown me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you think of one specific family member. Ask God to make your kindness and forgiveness toward that person real in the first conversation you have today.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Read this slowly while you think about a grievance you have been carrying. Ask the Lord to help you bear with that person and to release the debt in your own heart.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Let this passage prompt honest reflection on who you have not yet forgiven. Ask God to show you where forgiveness received from him should flow outward to your relatives.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for the freedom that comes when God removes our failures from us. Ask him to help you live today without dragging up old family wounds that he has already put away.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Pray this for the relationships that feel strained this morning. Ask God for wisdom to do your part toward peace, while trusting him with the parts that are not yours to control.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this before you check your phone, while the house is still quiet. Sit somewhere you can be undisturbed, such as the edge of your bed, a chair by the window, or the spot in the car where you wait before going inside. Keeping a pen nearby can help, so you can write down the name of any family member who comes to mind and return to that name later in the day.

A spouse, parent, or close friend can pray this with you, taking turns reading a paragraph each. Families who want to practice forgiveness together sometimes pray it over the breakfast table and then name one small way they will show grace that day. Whether you pray alone or with others, end by asking God to remind you of this prayer when the day gets difficult.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless the people you love today and keep their hearts open to grace. May he give them the same patience and mercy that he gives you, and may your home be a place where forgiveness is spoken, received, and lived out with gentleness and joy.
