Morning prayers for children’s faith are short, honest words a parent, grandparent, teacher or caregiver can pray over a child before the school bell, the car ride or the first cry of the day. This prayer is meant to be read aloud just as it is written, or used as a starting point to shape your own words for the child in front of you.

Morning Prayers for Children’s Faith

Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the child you have placed in my care. Before the cereal bowls are out and the backpacks are hunting for shoes, I bring them to you. Open their heart to know you as close and kind. Give them a sense that you are already awake, already at work, and already walking ahead of them into this day.

Help them to feel safe with you when they are nervous about a test, a new friend, or a teacher who seems stern. When they are tired or grumpy, soften their tempers and steady their steps. Let them hear your voice in small ways today, in a kind word from a classmate, a song on the radio, or a quiet moment before sleep. Give me patience when the morning goes sideways, and remind me that you are teaching them trust through how I respond.

Plant a love for your Word in them that grows stronger with each year. Let their questions about you be welcome in our home, and let them know they can bring every worry to you. Hold them in your protection from the moment they leave our door until the moment they return. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, this child is yours before they are mine. Go before them today, stay beside them through each hard moment, and let them feel your nearness. Help them know they are loved, that they can trust you, and that you have a good purpose for them. Keep them safe and help them grow in faith with every step. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a way of settling the morning rush. Ask the child to be still for a breath before they run out the door, and ask God to make his presence clear to them in that quiet moment.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to pray for trust when the day feels uncertain. Ask that your child would lean on God’s understanding rather than their own fears about school, friends or homework.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Pray this for courage in the face of new or frightening things. Ask God to remind your child that he goes with them wherever they go today.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Read this as a prayer of protection over the child’s comings and goings. Thank God that his keeping does not stop when the front door closes behind them.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when a fresh start is needed, whether after a hard day yesterday or a rough morning already. Ask God to show your child that his mercies are new each day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are standing in the kitchen with your hand resting on the child’s shoulder, or while you are buckling them into the car seat. A simple touch helps a young child feel the words, and it reminds you to slow down for a few seconds in the middle of the rush.

If other adults share the daily care of the child, such as a co-parent, grandparent or babysitter, invite them to pray it too, each adding a line about the day ahead. Some families keep a short card near the door with the prayer written on it so that anyone can read it aloud before the child heads out.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before this child today and keep their steps steady. May they know they are deeply loved, quickly forgiven and never alone. May God’s peace guard their heart as they learn and play, and may their faith grow a little brighter with every day that follows.
