This morning prayer for discernment is for the moment before the day takes over, when you need wisdom to tell what is good from what only looks good, and what is urgent from what is merely loud. Pray it as you wake, over a cup of coffee, or on the drive in, reading it aloud as written or using it as a starting point for your own words.
Morning Prayer for Discernment
Lord, I come to You before the day has a chance to speak. I do not yet know what the next hours will ask of me. There will be decisions at work that I have to make quickly, a conversation with my family that I may be tempted to rush, and messages on my phone that will pull at my attention before I have even finished my first prayer. Give me a clear mind this morning, Father. Help me slow down enough to hear You over the noise.
Show me what matters most today. When my boss asks for something by noon, help me see whether it is the thing that actually moves the work forward or just the thing that feels loudest. When someone I love is struggling, give me the patience to listen before I offer advice. When I am tempted to say yes out of fear of disappointing people, or no out of pride, gently turn my heart toward what is right. Give me sense enough to recognize my own motives, and honesty enough to name them to myself.
Thank You that I do not have to figure this out alone. I ask for Your wisdom, the kind that is patient and pure and willing to yield, and I trust You to give it generously. Keep my eyes open to the people and tasks You have placed in front of me, and close my ears to the voices that would lead me astray. Guide my steps today. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I need Your wisdom right now, before I say the next word or make the next call. Slow my thoughts, quiet my fears, and show me what is true and what is good. Let me hear You above the noise of the day and follow where You lead me. Thank You for being faithful when I am not sure of my next step. Amen.

Philippians 1:9-10
9 This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment; 10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offense to the day of Christ…
(WEB)
Paul prays for love that grows in knowledge and discernment. Pray this for the people you will meet today, and ask God to help you approve what is excellent in each of them.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying this prayer in the first quiet minutes of your morning, before you check messages or open your work email. Sit somewhere you can be still, with your Bible or a notebook nearby. If you can, write down one or two decisions you expect to face today, and pray specifically about them, so the prayer is tied to real moments rather than vague wishes.
Your hands can help you pray too. Hold a pen, a cup, or your open Bible while you speak, and let the physical act anchor your attention. You might also invite a spouse, roommate, or friend to pray it with you, or send it to someone who is facing a hard day. Discernment often grows in community, when others help us see what we cannot see alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord give you clear sight for the day ahead and a steady heart to follow what is good. May He guide your choices, steady your words, and remind you that you are never without His wisdom. Go into your morning in peace, knowing that the One who leads you is faithful.
