This morning prayer is for the year ahead, whether you are facing a new calendar, a new season of work or school, or simply a year you cannot yet picture. Pray it first thing, while the house is quiet and before the day’s noise begins. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Morning Prayer for the Year Ahead

Lord, I come to you before the rest of the year arrives. I do not know what the next twelve months will hold. Some of it I am looking forward to, and some of it I am afraid of. Money, health, work, the people I love, and the questions I have not yet answered are all on my mind this morning. Help me place each of them in your hands instead of carrying them alone.

Give me wisdom for the decisions I will face this year, the small ones at breakfast and the large ones I have been putting off. Teach me to ask for direction before I rush ahead. Where I have been careless with my time, my words, or my money, show me gently and give me the courage to change. Let my plans be open to your leading, and let me hold them loosely.

Be near to the people I will meet and depend on this year: my family, my friends, my coworkers, and the ones who are struggling quietly. Make me patient with them and honest with them. Keep me faithful when the year gets long and the days feel the same. Thank you that you already know how this year ends and that you have not left me to face it on my own. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this new year is in your hands. I give you the days I cannot see yet, along with the work, the people, and the worries I carry. Guide my steps, keep me honest, and help me trust you one day at a time. Be my strength when I am weak and my peace when I am anxious. In your name, amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time before your day begins, such as while the coffee is brewing or before you check your phone. Sit in the same chair each morning if you can, and keep a notebook nearby to write down anything God brings to mind. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to let your own concerns rise up and be named before him.

If you pray this with someone else, such as a spouse, a roommate, or a friend, take turns reading the lines aloud and then pray for one specific person or task each. Some people find it helpful to pray with an open hand, which reminds them to release what they are holding. Return to this prayer on the first morning of each month to check in and ask God to renew your focus.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every day of this year. May he be your guide when the path is unclear, your comfort when the road is hard, and your peace when your heart is restless. May you walk in his faithfulness from the first morning to the last.
